Harbaugh: Herbert needs to 'be better' amid Chargers' 0-3 start

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh shared rare criticism of quarterback Justin Herbert on Monday after Los Angeles fell to 0-3 this season.

​"Be better," Harbaugh said about Herbert's decision-making, according to ESPN's Kris Rhim. "And that drives Justin, that drives me, that drives his position coach, that drives Mike (McDaniel), the coordinator. I mean, drives us all."

Harbaugh has often lauded Herbert with high praise since joining the Chargers in 2024. He said on a recent podcast appearance that Herbert will one day be recognized as the greatest quarterback of all time. Harbaugh also deflected the blame from Herbert despite the passer's struggles in L.A.'s first two games this season.

Herbert, in his first year in McDaniel's offensive system, is completing a career-low 59.1% of his passes while throwing more interceptions (four) than touchdowns (three) through three games.

"We want to be better. We got to be better," Harbaugh said, according to Rhim. "We got to look at our scheme. We got to look at how we're performing, how we're doing things and who's doing it."

Herbert, a two-time Pro Bowler, passed for 226 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in Sunday's 24-16 defeat to the Buffalo Bills, who beat the Chargers despite committing five turnovers.

The Chargers will face the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
