The Chicago Cubs placed shortstop Dansby Swanson on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain, the team announced Monday, according to Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network.
Swanson's dealing with a Grade 2 oblique strain, a source told ESPN's Jesse Rogers. A normal timeline for such an injury is around four-to-six weeks, which could put his season in jeopardy. However, the team is optimistic that he'll return within the next month.
"We'll get Dansby back (this year)," manager Craig Counsell said Monday, according to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic.
Swanson left Sunday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals after hurting himself on a swing-and-miss in the third inning.
Brutal news for the Cubs.

Dansby Swanson is headed to the IL with a left oblique injury after leaving today’s game. MRI coming tomorrow to determine the severity.
Losing your everyday shortstop in the middle of a playoff race is a MASSIVE blow.
Hopefully this isn’t the last…
The two-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner is hitting .216/.300/.404 with 18 home runs and 66 RBIs in 119 games, while playing some of the best defense in the majors.
Swanson's 16 outs above average ranks fifth among all big-league players for the Cubs, who lead the majors with 86 defensive runs saved.
Nico Hoerner, who slid over from second to shortstop after Swanson left Sunday's game, is the likely candidate to take over the position full time during his absence. That would allow rookie Pedro Ramírez to play every day at second base.
The Cubs also placed right-hander Edward Cabrera on the 15-day IL with a middle finger blister before Monday's game. Cabrera had returned to action Sunday after a hamstring strain sidelined him for almost two months. However, he allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings against St. Louis.
The 28-year-old Cabrera was one of Chicago's major offseason additions, but he's struggled to a 5.68 ERA and 1.45 WHIP over just 15 starts because of injuries. He also lost time to a blister issue in May.
Cubs are starting to think Edward Cabrera might be best suited for shorter stints in the pen as his blister issue keeps popping up the longer he pitches in a game. Will work as a reliever when he returns.

The Cubs recalled right-hander Javier Assad and outfielder Kevin Alcántara from Triple-A Iowa, and also selected infielder Owen Miller from Triple-A as corresponding roster moves. Second baseman James Triantos was optioned to Iowa.
