White Sox become fastest team to 100 losses since 1916

The Detroit Tigers brushed aside the Chicago White Sox 9-4 on Sunday, handing the White Sox their 100th defeat of the season.

Chicago is the fastest team to reach 100 losses in a season (131 games) since the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics.

"Everyone in that locker room is aware of the record and how frustrating it is, absolutely," White Sox manager Grady Sizemore said postgame, according to Sarah Trotto of The Associated Press.

The White Sox are on pace to lose 124 games, which would break the modern-era record (since 1901) held by the 1962 New York Mets, who posted a 40-120-1 mark.

"We’ve been talking about it all year, I think," White Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi said, per MLB.com's Scott Merkin. "It's beating a dead horse at this point. We are not where we want to be, obviously."

Most losses in a season in modern era

The Tigers have won the first three games of a four-game series, outscoring the White Sox 27-10. Chicago led 2-0 after the first inning Sunday and 3-1 heading into the fourth. However, Detroit scored three in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead and added two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings.
