San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle will sit out Sunday's game against the New York Jets due to a knee sprain suffered in Week 1, the team announced Friday.
The 49ers originally thought Kittle had a chance to play this week, even if he didn't practice beforehand. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan says the star playmaker will instead remain in the Bay Area to rehab, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
Ross Dwelley and Jordan Reed will take on a more significant workload at the tight end spot in Kittle's absence.
Cornerback Jason Verrett - sidelined with a hamstring injury - is also ruled out for this week's contest. Defensive end Dee Ford is questionable to play due to a neck issue.
