With the No. 54 pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers selected Iowa State forward Marial Shayok.

Shayok took a chance transferring from perennial contender Virginia following his junior year, but it couldn't have worked out any better. The Canadian immediately slotted into the Cyclones' starting lineup after sitting out the 2017-18 season and launched himself onto the NBA draft radar. He was second in Big 12 scoring (18.7), field-goal percentage (49.6), and free-throw percentage (87.8) while hitting the fifth-most triples (71) in the conference.

The 23-year-old led Iowa State to its second Big 12 Tournament title in three years and was named tournament MVP. Shayok also captured first-team All-Big 12 honors and an AP All-American honorable mention. There's no doubt Shayok's a gifted scorer, but he'll need to do more than that to find a home on an NBA team.

What the analysts are saying

  • "He's streaky but can score comfortably from range off dribble pull-ups and in catch-and-shoot situations. The fact he has NBA-caliber length helps his case for staying on the floor, even though he's not typically a particularly committed defender. The biggest issue is that Shayok's game is somewhat one-dimensional at times, and the NBA already has plenty of scorers." - Sports Illustrated's Jeremy Woo
  • "He consistently finds ways to make shots ... Age (23) and heavy feet may make it tough for Shayok to get drafted, but he could be a coveted leftover prospect to pick up for training camp and summer league." - Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman
