<p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/37817" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/37817">Karl-Anthony Towns</a> says he played through a Grade 2 quad strain during the New York Knicks' 119-111 season-opening win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.</p><p>"I've been banged up and haven't really got a chance to practice or play in those last two preseason games, but I didn't want to disappoint the fans," Towns said postgame, according to <a href="https://x.com/sny_knicks/status/1981190020070285601">SNY</a>.</p><p>Towns added: "It's not something that's easy to deal with, but we made it happen tonight. I'm glad the fans respected the effort I put in to play tonight."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Towns' last preseason appearance came nearly two weeks ago on Oct. 9 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.</p><p>The five-time All-Star was downgraded to doubtful Wednesday afternoon before being upgraded to questionable an hour later.</p><p>Towns managed to put up 19 points and 11 rebounds in 31 minutes of action.</p><p>Towns has had trouble staying healthy throughout his NBA career. He missed at least 20 regular-season games in four of his last five campaigns with the T-Wolves.</p><p>New York acquired Towns from Minnesota in a blockbuster trade just weeks before the 2024-25 campaign. He has two more years remaining on his contract plus a $61-million player option for 2027-28.</p>

<p>The Toronto Tempo are hiring Sandy Brondello as the first head coach in franchise history, sources told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt0KuoO1KT0">Howard Megdal of The IX Sports</a>.</p><p>Brondello interviewed for the Dallas Wings' and Seattle Storm's coaching vacancies before choosing Toronto, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6741057/2025/10/22/toronto-tempo-sandy-brondello-head-coach/">The Athletic's Ben Pickman</a> reports.</p><p>Brondello joins the expansion team after being dismissed by the New York Liberty in September following four seasons together.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 57-year-old enjoyed great success in the Big Apple, posting a 107-53 record and guiding the Liberty to their maiden WNBA title. She leaves as New York's all-time wins leader.</p><p>Brondello was also at the helm of the Phoenix Mercury from 2014-21. She captured Coach of the Year honors and led the team to a championship during her first year in charge.</p><p>She registered a winning record with Phoenix on six occasions. Her 150 regular-season victories and 24 playoff wins remain team records.</p><p>Brondello has coached some of the biggest stars in the women's game, including Diana Taurasi, Breanna Stewart, and Sabrina Ionescu.</p><p>She has a decorated international career, too, having led Australia to a pair of podium finishes at the FIBA Women's World Cup and a third-place finish at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.</p>

<p>The NBA's Larry O'Brien Trophy logo is returning to center court along with the Finals script logo, sources told <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46687410/sources-larry-obrien-trophy-logo-returning-nba-finals-court">ESPN's Shams Charania</a>.</p><p>Both logos will be painted on the court as opposed to appearing digitally or being applied as decals, reports Charania.</p><p>The trophy last appeared on the hardwood during the 2009 NBA Finals. <p>Detroit Pistons guard <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/102756" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/102756">Jaden Ivey</a> will miss at least four weeks after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure to relieve right knee discomfort, the team announced Thursday.</p><p>The surgery is unrelated to the broken fibula he suffered in January against the Orlando Magic.</p><p>Ivey was having his best season prior to being sidelined, averaging career highs in points (17.6), rebounds (4.1), and 3-point percentage (40.9%).</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Purdue product made his first appearance since the fibula injury Oct. 6 versus the Memphis Grizzlies, tallying seven points, one rebound, and one assists in 14 minutes of action. He then sat out the Pistons' next two preseason games.</p><p>Ivey's entering the final year of his rookie deal. The 23-year-old is set to become a restricted free agent next summer if Detroit doesn't sign him to a rookie-scale contract extension.</p><p>The Pistons selected Ivey with the fifth overall pick in 2022.</p>

Brunson's an efficient three-level scorer who thrives in isolation and was dependable whenever the game was on the line. Meanwhile, Towns formed a deadly two-man tandem with Brunson, often rolling to the basket after setting a screen or popping out from beyond the arc. Simons' shot-creation will be helpful, too, but he's been a major defensive liability throughout his first seven campaigns. The four-time All-Star was never hesitant to pull up from the mid-range or beyond the arc when opposing defenses gave her the slightest space.</p><p>Young and Wilson each topped 30 points in the Aces' Game 5 overtime victory against the Fever, becoming the first pair of teammates to accomplish the feat in the same playoff game. <p>Duke head coach Jon Scheyer signed a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2030-31 season, vice president and director of athletics Nina King announced Thursday.</p><p>The 38-year-old Scheyer took over after the legendary Mike Krzyzewski retired in 2022. He had spent the previous eight seasons as an associate head coach and assistant under Krzyzewski.</p><p>Duke's reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Scheyer's three seasons in charge, including a Final Four run in 2025.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"Jon's remarkable impact over his first three seasons has positioned Duke basketball for sustained excellence, and we are proud to ensure his leadership well into the future," King said in a statement.</p><p>"He has delivered championships and national prominence, and he continues to lead a program built on character, connection, and a relentless pursuit of greatness."</p><p>Scheyer's 89 victories are tied with Brad Stevens and Brad Underwood for the most by a head coach through their first three seasons at the Division I level, according to ESPN Research.</p><p>Scheyer is excelling on the recruiting trail as well. Bonner provided an offensive spark when she joined the Mercury's top-scoring second unit in July, and her proven track record in the postseason should benefit the trio of rookies in their rotation.</p><p><strong>Reason for concern: Slow starts</strong></p><p>Phoenix needed to dig itself out of some early holes in the previous round. The Lynx outscored the Mercury in the first quarter in three of the four matchups, including Game 2, when Phoenix trailed by 16 points at halftime and was down by as many as 20 before mounting a comeback to avoid a 0-2 series deficit. In Game 4, the Mercury fell behind 25-14 through the opening 10 minutes and didn't make a field goal until the midway point of the quarter. The 29-year-old is punishing foes in the short roll, beating her counterparts off the bounce, and making contested fadeaways. She's come through for Las Vegas in the biggest moments, topping the 35-point mark in each series-clinching win. Wilson's defense has been equally impressive as she's recorded 5.4 stocks per contest.</p><p>The Aces went 3-0 against the Mercury this season with Wilson in the lineup as the All-Star center put up a dominating 25 points and 15.7 boards per game.</p><p><strong>Biggest strength: Championship experience</strong></p><p>Las Vegas is no stranger to the bright lights. It returns five players from its previous two championship squads, including Wilson, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young.</p><p>Wilson and Gray both have Finals MVP awards in their trophy cabinet. Meanwhile, Young is playing the best basketball of her career and was a key contributor in the Aces' most recent championship appearance, posting back-to-back games of at least 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists in their 2023 triumph over the Liberty. The former first-round pick wasn't in attendance for the club's media day and didn't travel to Abu Dhabi for their preseason games against the New York Knicks.</p><p>Grimes' side initially sought a contract in the $30 million range, according to Charania. His agent said the 76ers' first formal proposal was a four-year, $39-million contract offer that came on Sept. 24.</p><p>Grimes' representatives countered with a one-year contract worth $17 million while waiving the no-trade clause or a two-year deal at $34 million with a player option, adds Charania. The 76ers rejected both proposals, leading to Grimes signing the qualifying offer.</p><p>Philadelphia acquired Grimes from the Dallas Mavericks last February in exchange for Caleb Martin and a 2025 second-round pick.
