<p>The Chicago Sky are signing <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///olybbw/players/40629" href="https://thescore.com/olybbw/players/40629">Kia Nurse</a> to a one-year deal, her agent told <a href="https://x.com/alexaphilippou/status/1885818492345086438">ESPN's Alexa Philippou</a>.</p><p>Nurse spent last season with the Los Angeles Sparks, averaging 7.6 points and shooting 33.1% from beyond the arc over 40 appearances.</p><p>It was her second consecutive healthy season. Nurse missed the entire 2022 campaign after tearing her ACL in Game 4 of the 2021 WNBA Finals while playing for the Phoenix Mercury.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Nurse's best season came in 2019 when she averaged a career-high 13.7 points and earned her lone All-Star nod.</p><p>The New York Liberty selected Nurse with the No. 10 pick in 2018 following her standout career with UConn.</p><p>The 6-foot guard's 3-and-D skill set should help a Sky squad that finished eighth in defensive rating and last in threes made.</p><p>Chicago also reportedly acquired <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/68189" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/68189">Rebecca Allen</a> from the Connecticut Sun and brought back veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot.</p>

<p>Miami Heat icon Dwyane Wade had a cancerous tumor removed from his kidney in December 2023, he revealed Thursday on his podcast <a href="https://youtu.be/a8iAafZt6MI?si=XSHA8QqCOi7s1O93&amp;t=934">"The Why with Dwyane Wade."</a></p><p>Wade visited the doctor after he turned 40 to undergo a physical for the first time since his playing days. The Hall of Fame guard had been experiencing cramps and slow urination.</p><p>Wade underwent a full-body scan that showed a potential cyst/tumor on one of his kidneys.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"They were able to see something that was on ... my right kidney when I went in. I didn't go in for my kidneys," Wade said. "And so what I had on my kidney was a cyst, a tumor. But it was not nothing that could be biopsied. It was not nothing that they can test unless they went in and surgically removed it."</p><p>Wade consulted multiple doctors to confirm his cancer diagnosis before undergoing surgery, which required removing 40% of his right kidney.</p><p>"I had a personal decision to make. ... If this is cancerous, if this tumor, this cyst, is cancerous on your kidney, you're 41 years old. You probably need surgery because it's something that needs to be removed so it doesn't spread," Wade said. "I made the decision to have surgery. I had surgery on Dec. 18, 2023."</p><p>Wade added: "To find out - obviously at 41 years old, pretty healthy guy - that I did have cancer, thank God that I did do the surgery because the tumor was cancerous."</p><p>Wade played 15 of his 16 NBA seasons for the Heat, leading the franchise to three NBA championships. He was a 13-time All-Star and eight-time All-NBA selection.</p><p>Wade remains Miami's all-time leader in several categories, including points, assists, steals, and games played. The Heat retired Wade's No. 3 in 2020.</p>

<p>The Toronto Tempo are hiring Monica Wright Rogers as its first general manager, her agent told <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1884779301091844376">ESPN's Shams Charania and Alexa Philippou</a>.</p><p>Wright Rogers has served as the Phoenix Mercury's assistant general manager since January 2023. The 36-year-old also worked for the NBA's league office and had a pair of stints as an assistant coach at the collegiate level before joining the Mercury.</p><p>She spent the majority of her seven-year WNBA playing career with the Minnesota Lynx after being selected second overall in 2010. She was named to the WNBA All-Rookie Team that year and later helped the Lynx win a pair of championships.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Wright Rogers' best campaign came in 2013 when she came second in Most Improved Player and Sixth Woman of the Year award voting.</p><p>The Tempo are the first WNBA team based outside the United States and will begin play next year.</p>

<p>Veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot is expected to sign with the Chicago Sky, sources told <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/2025/01/29/sources-courtney-vandersloot-is-expected-to-sign-with-the-sky-as-an-unrestricted-free-agent">Annie Costabile of The Chicago Sun-Times</a>.</p><p>Vandersloot left the Sky in free agency two years ago to join the New York Liberty. She averaged 8.7 points, 6.6 assists, and 2.6 boards over 70 appearances with the Liberty.</p><p>The 35-year-old was an All-Star in her first campaign in the Big Apple and helped the club win its maiden WNBA title last season.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Chicago drafted Vandersloot with the third overall pick in 2011. She spent her first 12 seasons in the Windy City, earning four All-Star nods, two All-WNBA first-team selections, and a league championship.</p><p>Vandersloot has led the WNBA in assists on seven occasions and is the Sky's all-time leader for dimes.</p>

He and his assistants have collectively refused to adapt to the modern game, leaning once again on a heavy diet of mid-range jumpers. The Razorbacks are 201st in threes attempted (22.3 per game) and 251st in 3-point percentage (32.5%). Guards D.J. Wagner and Johnell Davis are shooting 35.5% and 27.7%, respectively, in SEC play. Five-star recruit Boogie Fland also struggled up until his season-ending hand injury, making only 28.2% of his field goals across five conference games.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Arkansas' lack of floor spacing has been problematic, especially since its roster features an abundance of big men and downhill drivers. Opponents can clog the paint without much repercussions, making it much more difficult for the Razorbacks to get easy baskets down low. The program ranks 279th nationally with only 34.5% of its field-goal attempts coming at the rim, per <a href="https://hoop-explorer.com/OnOffAnalyzer?autoOffQuery=true&amp;baseQuery=&amp;calcRapm=true&amp;gender=Men&amp;maxRank=400&amp;minRank=0&amp;offQuery=&amp;onQuery=&amp;showGrades=rank%3ACombo&amp;team=Arkansas&amp;teamShotCharts=true&amp;year=2024%2F25&amp;">Hoop-Explorer.com</a>.</p><p>It's not as if Calipari inherited Eric Musselman's roster, either. The Hall of Fame coach reportedly has "at least" $5 million annually in NIL funds at his disposal, a source told <a href="https://www.on3.com/nil/news/john-calipari-finalizes-deal-arkansas-razorbacks-kentucky-wildcats-nil-collective-crucial-role/">On3's Pete Nakos</a>. Calipari could've theoretically brought in anybody with that type of budget, yet he chose to recruit multiple Kentucky players and members of the Wildcats' 2024 class. The Hogs aren't short on talent, but the pieces don't fit together. The program is undefeated in the Big Ten after posting no more than 11 conference wins in each of the previous four campaigns. Some predicted Michigan State to be in a transition year with its top scorer (Tyson Walker), rebounder (Malik Hall), and playmaker (A.J. Hoggard) all graduating. But Tom Izzo has done a tremendous job getting his players to buy into their roles and play unselfishly.</p><p>The Spartans rank eighth in the NCAA in assists, led by Jeremy Fears Jr. at 6.3 dimes per contest. They operate on a 10-man rotation, with each player averaging at least 14 minutes of action. While Jaden Akins paces the team in scoring, anyone in the rotation can step up on any given night. Freshman Jase Richardson - the son of two-time Slam Dunk champ Jason Richardson - was the latest player to rise to the occasion. He registered a career-high 20 points and four boards in the school's most recent victory over Rutgers.</p><p>Richardson is one of many weapons on college basketball's <a href="https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/1284"><strong>second-highest</strong></a>-scoring bench. Omaha transfer Frankie Fidler has brought some additional offensive punch to the second unit since making way for Tre Holloman in the starting lineup. Coen Carr often provides a spark with his perimeter defense and explosive athleticism in transition. Xavier Booker gives the Spartans some rim protection and rebounding.</p><p>The biggest concern for Michigan State is its shortage of 3-point threats. The Spartans are draining only 5.5 threes per contest at a 28.7% success rate. New head coach Pat Kelsey already has three more victories than predecessor Kenny Payne, and he's guided the Cardinals to their first AP ranking in four years.</p><p>Louisville's turnaround starts with its offense. Kelsey's enjoyed success at each of his previous stops deploying an up-tempo brand of basketball that emphasizes 3-point shooting. The Cardinals have taken on that same identity, making 9.9 triples per contest - an increase of nearly 4.5 - and averaging the sixth-most threes (31.1) in the nation. They tied the single-game ACC record with 19 makes from beyond the arc in last Tuesday's win over SMU.</p><p>Senior guard Reyne Smith is spearheading Louisville's outside attack, ranking second in the NCAA with 78 triples. The school's 3-point barrage has largely resulted in a<strong> </strong>top-25 offensive unit, according to <a href="https://kenpom.com/index.php?s=RankAdjOE">KenPom</a>.</p><p>The Cardinals' defense has made significant strides as well, surrendering 9.3 fewer points per game than the season prior. They provide the necessary help and play aggressively without fouling. Wisconsin transfer Chucky Hepburn has been a major defensive catalyst, tallying a conference-leading 49 steals. Terrence Edwards has also recently been effective against the opposition's top scorers, which includes a shutdown performance on North Carolina guard RJ Davis. Its elite defense has made up for a lack of sharpshooters. Pitino's squad ranks third in blocks (6.2), 10th in opponent 2-point field-goal percentage (43.6%), and 16th in turnovers forced (15.8).</p><p><strong>Woodson's time is up: </strong>Mike Woodson's seat is scorching hot with the Hoosiers off to an uninspiring start. Indiana is hovering around the bubble thanks to a <a href="https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1/ncaa-mens-basketball-net-rankings">2-7</a> mark against Quad 1 teams. While its 14-7 overall record isn't bad on the surface, how the team has lost is concerning. Five of the Hoosiers' losses have been by 16-plus points. Their 25-point home defeat to Illinois earlier this month was the second-most lopsided result in Assembly Hall history and a reflection of how far one of the sport's top brands has fallen. Some Indiana players noticeably lacked effort, many fans left at halftime, and chants of "Fire Woodson" rained down from the remaining Hoosiers faithful. The school shouldn't be a borderline tournament team in Year 4 of the Woodson era. Indiana has just one NCAA Tournament victory under Woodson despite having multiple future NBAers and one of the highest NIL budgets for the transfer portal. It's become more than evident that Woodson isn't the right person to lead the Hoosiers back to prominence.</p><p><strong>Purdue thriving post-Edey:</strong> Purdue continues to chug along following the departure of star big man Zach Edey. The Boilermakers are in the hunt for a third straight Big Ten regular-season crown, sitting just one game back of Michigan State for first place. Braden Smith has proven that his success wasn't just a byproduct of playing alongside the back-to-back Wooden Award winner. The junior guard is having an All-American campaign, averaging 15.4 points, 8.9 assists, and 2.4 steals. Trey Kaufman-Renn is having the breakout campaign many projected, tallying a team-high 18.1 points per game to go along with 6.3 boards and 2.5 assists. Fletcher Loyer remains one of the country's top 3-point shooters, knocking down 43 threes and 46.7% of his long-range attempts. Matt Painter's defense relies on instinctual plays and staying disciplined to make up for the absence of a rim-protector. Purdue does a great job guarding the 3-point shot, applying pressure, and scoring off turnovers.</p>

Golden State dealt Poole to the Wizards that offseason in the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/314" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/314">Chris Paul</a> trade.</p><p>Green added that he still goes back and forth on what went down with Poole, but he also recognizes that his ex-teammate had a role in how he reacted.</p><p>"I know I was wrong, but you can't call a man a B-word and push him and not get hit, either," he said. "So, I kind of sit in both of those spaces sometimes. Like, the reality is, the answer is probably somewhere in the middle, right? I shouldn't have knocked him out like that. If anything, I should have hemmed him up. It kind of was just a natural reaction."</p><p>Green added: "I think, for him, you are kind of bringing that back up on yourself. Like when you do that, you just bring back that moment up on yourself. You just got to move on and just keep it pushing, man. Got to let it go."</p>

Freshman forward Joyce Edwards and sophomore guard MiLaysia Fulwiley have picked up the offensive slack for the second unit, posting a combined 30.8 points per contest. Kitts has been an active presence on the glass, providing the Gamecocks with second-chance point opportunities. Feagin has stepped up as a rim-protector with 12 blocks over her last four games. South Carolina has limited opponents to 20.6% shooting from deep and 30.9% overall with Watkins out of the lineup. The former No. 1 overall recruit is averaging 18.8 points on 61.2% shooting - including a 56.5% mark from distance - over her last four contests. She scored double digits in each game during that span after doing so just twice in her first nine appearances. Fudd hasn't tallied 10 points or more in four straight contests since a torrid six-game stretch to begin her sophomore year.</p><p>"(Fudd's) starting to look more and more like her confident self," Bueckers told <a href="https://x.com/SNYUConn/status/1879708123650273701">SNY's Chelsea Sherrod</a> following last Wednesday's victory over St. John's. "I think this stretch has been huge for her."</p><p>Fudd's talent has never been in question. The 5-foot-11 guard was the first high school sophomore to win the Gatorade National Girls' Basketball Player of the Year award. She was also a McDonald's All-American and part of a select group to attend Stephen Curry's offseason training camp. However, injuries have threatened to derail her career at every step. Fudd suffered a torn ACL and MCL in her junior year of high school during a USA Basketball U18 3x3 tournament. She missed 11 games in her debut collegiate campaign with a foot injury, another 22 as a sophomore due to a knee injury, and all but two contests in 2023-24 after tearing her ACL and medial meniscus in practice. A knee sprain has already interrupted her senior season.</p><p>Fudd's health could single-handedly swing the Huskies' national championship hopes in either direction. She's a true three-level scorer and forces turnovers on the defensive end. UConn sorely missed Fudd's outside shooting in both defeats this season. Notre Dame limited the Huskies to 3-of-16 shooting from long range, and USC held them to a 6-of-23 clip with Fudd on a minutes restriction. They've also embraced an up-tempo brand of basketball led by their star trio.</p><p>Flau'Jae Johnson and Aneesah Morrow were named to the Wooden Award midseason top 25 list. Johnson has taken the next step in her development, averaging a team-high 20 points, 6.1 boards, 2.9 assists, and 1.7 steals. She's getting to the charity stripe more, shooting threes efficiently, and routinely taking on the opposition's best perimeter player. Meanwhile, Morrow has been a walking double-double, pacing the NCAA in that department along with rebounds (14.2). Her most recent double-double moved her into a tie for second on the Division I all-time list. Mikaylah Williams rounds out LSU's explosive attack with 16.5 points on 48% shooting. Her rebounding and secondary playmaking ability have been a helpful weapon in the team's back pocket.</p><p>Kim Mulkey also had another successful offseason in the transfer portal. Kailyn Gilbert carries the offensive load for the second unit, Jersey Wolfenbarger always brings energy on the glass, and Shayeann Day-Wilson has been a great decision-maker at the point. The 20-0 Tigers played a relatively light non-conference schedule, but they proved capable of closing out tight games, winning all five contests that were decided by 10 points or less.</p><p>LSU's biggest test of the season awaits Thursday when it heads to Columbia for a showdown versus South Carolina. The 5-foot-7 guard consistently makes smart decisions and has developed a strong pick-and-roll tandem with center Sedona Prince. Van Lith ranks seventh nationally in total assists (120)<strong> </strong>and<strong> </strong>26th in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.54). Her strong play has propelled the Horned Frogs to a 19-1<strong> </strong>start and their first-ever top-10 appearance in the AP Poll. Van Lith's ability to play either guard position has undoubtedly improved her draft stock.</p><p><strong>Amoore leading Kentucky's turnaround:</strong> Georgia Amoore followed Kenny Brooks to Lexington shortly after he left Virginia Tech to take Kentucky's head coaching gig. The Wildcats tasked the Aussie native with helping a roster - featuring 11 new players - get up to speed with Brooks' lethal offensive system. Amoore has also provided leadership and elite point guard play for a unit that struggled to score last season. "We don't have room for error - for much error."</p><p>James added, "We don't have a choice. I mean ... that's the way our team is constructed. And we have to, we have to play close-to-perfect basketball."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Lakers head coach JJ Redick echoed James' comments and stressed the importance of fundamentals to compensate for the squad's flaws.</p><p>"We don't have a huge margin for error. Nor can we create that margin organically," Redick said. "It has to be emphasized daily to touch the paint, to play paint-to-great mentality, make the extra pass. We don't have a guy on our team that's going to necessarily always draw two to the ball. We don’t have a guy on our team that's going to be able to get past his guy one-on-one and get to the paint and spread it out to the perimeter.</p><p>"Like, that's just not our team. So we have to do it through connectivity, through execution. And when we do that, we're really good."</p><p>Two of the Lakers' biggest weaknesses were on display against their crosstown rivals as they shot only 9-of-27 from deep and were outmatched in the paint against <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/52287" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/52287">Ivica Zubac</a>.</p><p>Ty Lue's second-ranked defense racked up 12 steals against the Lakers and scored 21 points off turnovers.</p><p>The Clippers led by as many as 26 points. The Lakers cut the deficit to 11 with 8:04 remaining but couldn't pull any closer.</p><p>The Lakers have dropped four of their past six games and sit sixth in the West with a 22-18 record.</p>

"We also saw the Capitol building ... and then we've gotta go back for the Big Ten Tournament.</p><p>"I mean you can't possibly be serious. … They do it one time. Stop. ... I mean, he's asking me to feel sorry because Iowa had to come to L.A. for a few days."</p>

<p>South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley has agreed to a contract extension through the 2029-2030 campaign, the school announced Friday.</p><p>Staley's new $25.25-million deal will make her the highest-paid coach in women's college basketball history. Her contract includes an annual salary of $4 million, a $500,000 signing bonus, and an annual $250,000 escalator.</p><p>"I'm proud to represent the University of South Carolina and of its investment in women's basketball," Staley <a href="https://gamecocksonline.com/news/2025/01/17/south-carolina-staley-ink-historic-contract-extension/">said</a> in a statement. "What we've been able to accomplish on the court is a testament to what can happen when you bring together the right people from a team perspective but also have the right commitment from the university, the athletics department, and the community to providing that team with everything it needs to be successful."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>South Carolina has transformed into a powerhouse since Staley's hiring in 2008.
