Star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. apologized to fans and teammates for his recent comments about the Toronto Blue Jays awarding him a $500-million contract based on his past achievements.
"I regret my comments the other day," Guerrero told reporters Friday, including Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling.
"I felt from my heart that my fans and my teammates needed an apology from me. I'm going to continue working hard to make my contract great."
Guerrero's remarks come as he nears the end of a career-worst campaign that includes a .263/.335/.360 slash line, nine home runs, and 56 RBIs in 142 games.
"It's been a disappointing year for me," Guerrero added Friday. "I couldn't help my team to accomplish our goal. It's hard for me."
Guerrero said he had already spoken with his teammates and decided to apologize to fans after receiving advice from his Hall-of-Fame father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr.
"He told me what I did was wrong and to make sure that I do what I'm doing right now - to give my fans an apology," the Blue Jays first baseman said.
Taking questions later, Guerrero said "the comments that I made the other day is not what I really wanted to say."
