Cardinals' Molina tests positive for COVID-19

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina tested positive for COVID-19, he announced in a team statement Tuesday.

"I am saddened to have tested positive for COVID-19, even after adhering to safety guidelines that were put in place," Molina said. "I will do everything in my power to return as soon as possible for Cardinals fans, the city of St. Louis, and my teammates. As I recover, I request that you respect my privacy and family in my absence from the team."

The Cardinals had seven players and six staff members test positive over the past week.

Molina, Paul DeJong, Junior Fernandez, Rangel Ravelo, Edmundo Sosa, and Kodi Whitley were among the players to test positive, according to the Cardinals' statement.

Following the 13 positives, the Cardinals also announced their latest round of testing didn't produce any new positive results, according to MLB.com's Anne Rogers.

Molina has been an instrumental part of the Cardinals for 17 seasons, helping them to two World Series titles in 2006 and 2011. The 38-year-old is a nine-time All-Star and has won nine Gold Gloves.

St. Louis placed five of the six players confirmed to have tested positive for COVID-19 on the injured list Tuesday; Ravelo was not placed on the IL. Former All-Star pitcher Carlos Martinez, who allowed six earned runs in his first start of the season, was also placed on the IL with an undisclosed injury.

The Cardinals activated infielder Brad Miller from the 10-day IL in a corresponding move, and they plan to announce additional changes to both their active roster and 60-man player pool in the next few days.
