The Philadelphia Phillies placed left-hander Jesús Luzardo on the 15-day injured list, the team announced Tuesday.
Philadelphia recalled left-hander Kyle Backhus to take Luzardo's spot on the active roster. The team initially announced that right-hander Grant Holman would be brought up from Triple-A as the corresponding move but then changed course about an hour later without offering an explanation.
Luzardo will miss the remainder of the regular season, but manager Don Mattingly wouldn't rule out the southpaw from returning for the postseason, according to The Athletic's Matt Gelb.
"I know it's something that'll go away with time, but right now we don't have that much time," Luzardo said, according to Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The pitcher guaranteed that he would be ready to pitch in the playoffs but was unsure of what role he could fill.
"I can't say 100% I'm going to start, but that's the goal. I feel confident I can make that happen," he said.
Luzardo was scratched from a start Saturday with shoulder stiffness. An MRI revealed no structural damage.
The All-Star threw the first complete game of his career in his last outing against the Atlanta Braves on Sept. 7. He owns a 2.87 ERA and sits second in the National League with 221 strikeouts.
Philadelphia's rotation will be composed of Cristopher Sánchez, Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, and Andrew Painter without Luzardo available to pitch.
The Phillies enter Tuesday in the second NL wild-card spot and are 4.5 games behind the Braves for first place in the NL East.
