Report: Falcons plan to release Mooney
The Atlanta Falcons are planning to release wide receiver Darnell Mooney, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Mooney was set to enter the final season of a three-year, $39-million contract that he signed with the Falcons as a free agent in March 2024. Parting with Mooney will save Atlanta $7.42 million in cap space but will result in $11 million in dead money, per Over the Cap.
The 28-year-old provided an immediate impact in his first campaign with the Falcons in 2024, finishing second on the team with 64 catches for 992 yards along with five touchdowns. However, Mooney's production dipped significantly last season, with his average receiving yards per game dropping from 62 to 29.5.
Mooney recorded 32 receptions for 443 yards and one score in 2025. He spent the first four years of his career with the Chicago Bears.
Atlanta is now seeking more depth for a receiving corps headlined by Drake London. The Falcons also recently placed the franchise tag on Kyle Pitts as the two sides continue to negotiate a long-term contract.
Mooney joins a growing list of veteran wideouts poised to hit the free-agent market. Mike Evans, Alec Pierce, Rashid Shaheed, and Stefon Diggs are among the notable names expected to garner attention as free agency opens on March 11.
