Lane Johnson calls Eagles' offense 'predictable' after TNF loss
Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson called out his offense following a 34-17 loss to the New York Giants on Thursday.
"We're just not very good right now," Johnson said postgame. "I feel like a lot of what we did last year was run play-action, and it kinda fed off each other. Defense had a real hard time of guessing what it was gonna be. I feel like the last two weeks, you know what it is. You know when the pass is coming, you know when the run is coming."
He added: "We gotta be able to keep the defense guessing, not be predictable. We have spurts, but there's nothing that's consistent about what we're doing."
The Eagles' offense is off to a rough start under first-year coordinator Kevin Patullo. They've scored just 34 combined points in back-to-back losses and have been out-gained in every game this season. They also rank 24th in EPA/dropback, according to Ben Baldwin's database.
Philly has struggled, in particular, during the final two quarters of games. Across the last three contests, the team has scored just 14 points on 19 second-half possessions and holds the worst three-and-out rate in the NFL during that stretch, according to The Ringer's Sheil Kapadia.
After leading the league with 2,005 rushing yards last season, running back Saquon Barkley has yet to eclipse 90 rushing yards in a game this year.
"I think we also have to get back into that attitude, that mindset, not really giving a f--- what people are trying to do," Barkley said, according to Tim McManus of ESPN. "That's something that I'm looking for."
Jalen Hurts, last year's Super Bowl MVP, threw a crucial interception in the fourth quarter that all but ended the Eagles' chances of coming back.
"Bad ball. Bad ball," Hurts said of the interception. "I didn't execute well enough situationally, and I obviously can't turn the ball over in the red zone. I'll look into the tape, and I know our team will as a group, and we'll get critical of ourselves on that and learn from it."
The Eagles, who sit 4-2, will have 10 days' rest before facing off against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7.
