Saints trading Lattimore to Commanders
The Washington Commanders are acquiring four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints, the team announced Tuesday.
Washington will receive a fifth-round pick as part of the deal while sending a third-, fourth-, and sixth-round selection to New Orleans, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN.
As of Tuesday, the Commanders had nine picks in the 2025 draft, including an extra third- and sixth-round selection. Though Washington will send its own third-rounder to New Orleans for Lattimore, the sixth-round pick involved in the agreement originally belonged to the Saints, who dealt it to the Commanders in exchange for defensive lineman John Ridgeway in August.
The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers were also reportedly interested in Lattimore ahead of Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET trade deadline.
Lattimore is under contract through the 2026 season. He'll cost $605,000 against the salary cap for the remainder of 2024, according to ESPN's Field Yates. Lattimore is due $36.5 million across the final two years of his deal.
New Orleans will eat $14 million in 2024 and $31.6 million in 2025 in dead cap as part of the trade, per Spotrac.
The Saints became sellers after losing their seventh straight game Sunday. New Orleans fired head coach Dennis Allen on Monday with a 2-7 record.
Lattimore took the NFL by storm and established himself as one of the league's top corners after the Saints drafted him 11th overall in 2017. He claimed four Pro Bowl nods and the Defensive Rookie of the Year award through his first five seasons. However, the 28-year-old hasn't earned a Pro Bowl berth since 2021.
He's recorded 30 tackles and two pass breakups in seven appearances this season. The former Ohio State star has missed two games in 2024, including last week's loss to the Carolina Panthers with a hamstring injury. Lattimore hasn't played a full season since the 2018 campaign.
The Commanders have had a magical start to their 2024 season, posting a 7-2 record in quarterback Jayden Daniels' first NFL campaign. That made Washington a surprise buyer at the deadline.
Bolstering the cornerback position has been a priority for the team in recent years, as it drafted Emmanuel Forbes in the first round in 2023 and Mike Sainristil in Round 2 in 2024. The Commanders - who've allowed a 103.9 passer rating to opposing QBs this year - also roster corners Benjamin St-Juste and Noah Igbinoghene, among others.
The Commanders have recorded only three interceptions this season. They play the Saints in New Orleans in Week 15.
Running back Alvin Kamara is now the only player currently on New Orleans' active roster from the franchise's iconic 2017 draft class, widely considered one of the best draft hauls in the NFL over the last decade.
Offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk, who went 32nd overall that year, remains with the team but has yet to play this season after being placed on the physically unable to perform list with a knee injury.
