The 24-year-old battled injuries in 2025 and is coming off a down season. However, he posted strong performances at the Senior Bowl and the NFL combine.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Tests at the NFL combine revealed a cyst on his spine as the cause of the oblique pain that affected his 2025 campaign, sources told <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/2046233646185468202">NFL Network's Tom Pelissero</a>. Doctors reportedly don't see it as a short- or long-term issue.</p><p>Nussmeier joins quarterbacks <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/89514" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/89514">Patrick Mahomes</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/161671" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/161671">Justin Fields</a> in Kansas City. But after a rough senior season culminated in back-to-back benchings, he's more of a mid-round lottery ticket. He certainly still has upside, as the LSU product has demonstrated several traits that teams look for in quarterback prospects. The natural arm talent was a big selling point before last year's struggles with an abdominal injury. Nussmeier can make every throw on the field, and he's no stranger to highlight-reel plays when forced to work off-platform. He also plays with good anticipation and shows an ability to buy time within the pocket, reset, and deliver downfield.</p><p>It all sounds like the profile of a potential starter at the next level, and that outcome is still on the table. But Nussmeier's drop-off last year was a reminder of the narrow margin for error with a gunslinger like this. The highs have to be consistent if they're to compensate for the lows that come with his aggressive, borderline reckless style. Nussmeier has a chance to be a steal if he can cut down on the turnover issues in the NFL. Otherwise, he likely settles in as a high-variance backup.</p>

<p><em>Follow the 2026 NFL Draft with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3501335" href="https://thescore.com/news/3501335">theScore's live tracker</a> to see all picks as they happen.</em></p><p>In front of their home crowd, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Penn State quarterback Drew Allar with the 76th overall pick in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft.</p><p>Pittsburgh is still waiting for <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/747" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/747">Aaron Rodgers</a> to decide on his future after the four-time NFL MVP played his age-42 season with the team in 2025.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Steelers also roster longtime backup <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/83531" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/83531">Mason Rudolph</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/210204" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/210204">Will Howard</a>, whom they drafted in the sixth round last year.</p><p>Allar lacked consistency at Penn State but displayed great arm strength. Probably not. But draft picks are made with the future in mind. If you're a team that's confident in developing players at this position, then Allar's physical traits should be more than enough to pique your interest. The Penn State product is a prototypical quarterback prospect in terms of size, arm strength, and athletic ability. He showed flashes of the upside during his time in Happy Valley, including on a run to the CFP semifinal in 2024.</p><p>The hope was that he'd put it all together this past season as a senior and emerge as a first-rounder in this quarterback class. It didn't quite work out that way, as he got off to a slow start in 2025 before suffering a season-ending broken ankle in October. As a result, Allar is probably a Day 3 lottery ticket. He'll likely need to follow the long-winded Jordan Love development path if he's going to work through his struggles with accuracy and processing. Those efforts may have to start with a ground-up overhaul of his mechanics - a long shot, to be sure. Still, you can't teach these kinds of physical skills. The mere chance that he taps into his upside makes him worth a swing later in the draft.</p>

On one hand, it makes sense. The Washington product indeed dominates that area of the game, using his size, body control, and ability to shield off defenders to attack the ball at its highest point. He prevailed in 10 of 13 contested situations in 2025, good for an absurd 76.9% success rate, according to PFF. However, he's hardly a one-trick pony. Boston actually moves quite well for his size, as he's capable of sinking his hips and changing direction at the top of his routes.</p><p>His physicality shows up after the catch and in a willingness to get involved as a blocker. The straight-line speed will be an issue for some, and his decision to skip the 40-yard dash at both the combine and his pro day is telling. But he was never considered a candidate to run by defenses at the professional level anyway. Boston could end up being the biggest steal of this receiver class if overblown questions about his athleticism caused him to slide.</p>

Those droughts ended Thursday with Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza going to the Las Vegas Raiders first overall.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><strong>Ohio State steals the show:</strong> Three Buckeyes were drafted in the top seven: receiver Carnell Tate (No. 4), pass-rusher Arvell Reese (No. 5), and linebacker Sonny Styles (No. 7). He's a highly competitive player who does the dirty work required of slot receivers in the run game, provides toughness over the middle of the field, and punches far above his weight class in contested situations.</p><p>His size and relatively limited catch radius may present issues at the pro level, but his demeanor should help him translate everything he put on tape in college. His dynamic playmaking ability after the catch stands out, and he consistently makes the first defender miss. He also provides value in the return game. If Lemon joins an offense that maximizes his do-it-all skill set, he's sure to become a Pro Bowler.</p>

He also rushed for 276 yards and seven TDs, including a score in the College Football Playoff National Championship against Miami.</p><p>Mendoza is the Raiders' first No. 1 overall selection since JaMarcus Russell in 2007. The former LSU star, however, eventually left the franchise as one of the biggest busts in NFL history, making only 25 starts with 18 touchdowns and 23 picks from 2007-09.</p><p>Las Vegas has lacked stability at quarterback since parting ways with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/22061" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/22061">Derek Carr</a> at the end of the 2022 season. It's fair to be concerned about his ceiling, as the Indiana product doesn't have the off-script playmaking traits that might put him in the Caleb Williams tier of franchise-changing prospects. However, he's got more than enough arm to make any throw on the field, and he's a better athlete than you might think. Accuracy is Mendoza's superpower operating from the pocket. He can place the ball wherever he wants at every level and has the touch to layer throws over top of underneath defenders. He also has a supreme feel for back-shoulder balls in one-on-one situations down the sideline. His ability to work on time and play with anticipation often leaves defensive backs unable to break on the ball.</p><p>There aren't many examples of him working deep into progressions before pulling the ball down, so there's some projection required in that all-important area. Given his level of pre-snap processing, an NFL offense with more built-in answers for pressure could mitigate concerns about his sack numbers. And while much of Indiana's system was built on run-pass options, there are plenty of instances of Mendoza ripping pro-level throws downfield. A play-action-heavy system that emphasizes the vertical attack could unlock an even better version of the Heisman winner.</p>

The move also means Cincinnati will likely go without a first-round choice for just the second time in franchise history. The club's highest remaining 2026 selection is currently No. 41.</p><p>Six teams have multiple first-round picks this year. In addition to the Giants, the New York Jets (No. 2 and 16), Cleveland Browns (No. 6 and 24), Kansas City Chiefs (No. 9 and 29), Miami Dolphins (No. 11 and 30), and Dallas Cowboys (No. 12 and 20) own extra Round 1 selections.</p>

<p>Former LSU head coach Brian Kelly believes Lane Kiffin will thrive in Baton Rouge - as long as he keeps being himself.</p><p>"Lane doesn't need advice," Kelly told <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2026/04/15/brian-kelly-what-went-wrong-at-lsu-advice-for-lane-kiffin-whats-next/89608646007/">John Brice of USA Today</a>. "He's seen it from the NFL to (USC) to building a program. ... I don't think I'm telling him anything he doesn't know.</p><p>"The world we live in today - Michigan just won a basketball championship with five transfers. You can do it, but there are so many moving pieces. I don't think he needs any advice. ... People are going to judge you based upon what they think anyway. So, just be Lane Kiffin."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Kiffin, who became the most coveted coach in college football last season, left Ole Miss to join LSU in November, signing a seven-year, $91-million contract to replace Kelly.</p><p>LSU fired Kelly midway through the season, his fourth with the team. He posted a 34-14 record with the Tigers, who didn't come close to contending for a national title under his watch.</p><p>The 64-year-old reflected on his disappointing LSU tenure.</p><p>"I would say there's an easy, simple answer, and I didn't win enough games," Kelly said. "There's a longer answer to why that didn't happen; I'll probably have to write a book about that. There's always cause and effect, and the effect was I didn't win enough games, period.</p><p>"We were 34-14, 22-3 at home, when I was fired. We had two 10-win seasons, won an SEC (West Division) championship, had the No. 1 offense in college football, a Heisman Trophy winner. When you look at what is winning and what keeps you employed, other people make those decisions. But it starts with what is defined as winning, and unfortunately, it wasn't defined as enough winning leading into being fired."</p><p>Kelly previously achieved great success at Grand Valley State, Cincinnati, and most notably, Notre Dame. He helped the Fighting Irish reach the national title game in 2013.</p><p>The three-time Coach of the Year said he still wants to "make a difference" in college football.</p><p>"The motivator for me is what you miss," Kelly said. "The decisions that were made (at LSU), those were other people. I didn't have any control over that. What you lose is relationships with players, when I've been doing it my entire career. I miss that the most.</p><p>"All the young men that have been under my charge over 35 years. I feel like I have a lot still to give. Even with all this money in college football, they still need mentorship, still need development. ... My motivation is to want to get back to building relationships and successful programs."</p>

<p>The Las Vegas Raiders have long been expected to take quarterback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/players/171730" href="https://thescore.com/ncaaf/players/171730">Fernando Mendoza</a> with the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, but that hasn't stopped teams from inquiring about a potential trade for this year's No. 1 selection.</p><p>"We've gotten a few calls, and those teams know where they stand," Raiders general manager John Spytek said Tuesday, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/48488757/raiders-spytek-says-teams-inquired-no-1-draft-pick">ESPN's Ryan McFadden</a>.</p><p>Spytek also addressed the possibility of making trades during this year's draft, which takes place April 23-25.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"If there's a player that stands out that we feel it's not worth losing, it's not worth even picking up the phone, then we'll just make the pick," Spytek added. "But if it's a player that we're not as excited about, or there's a group of players that we would love to pick from, and we can get value for that, we're certainly open to listening to that."</p><p>The Raiders' quarterback room currently features <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/188217" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/188217">Aidan O'Connell</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/14947" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/14947">Kirk Cousins</a>, who signed with the team on April 2. First-year head coach Klint Kubiak recently praised Mendoza but said he'd prefer not to start a rookie quarterback immediately.</p><p>"Ultimately, this is a meritocracy, and the best guy will play," Spytek said about Las Vegas' QB plans. "It's just really hard to play really well at a young age. But we've seen plenty of quarterbacks do it recently."</p><p>The Raiders haven't drafted a first-round QB since landing JaMarcus Russell first overall in 2007.</p>
