<p>The SEC will implement a nine-game conference football schedule starting in 2026, the league announced Thursday.</p><p>SEC teams have played eight conference football games each season since 1992.</p><p>As part of the SEC's updated schedule, each school will play three annual opponents with a focus on traditional rivalries. Each team's remaining six league games will rotate among the remaining schools in the conference.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The new format will also have each team face every other SEC school at least once every two years and every opponent home and away in a four-year stretch.</p><p>The SEC is keeping its single-standing, non-divisional structure.</p><p>"Adding a ninth SEC game underscores our universities' commitment to delivering the most competitive football schedule in the nation," SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement. "This format protects rivalries, increases competitive balance and, paired with our requirement to play an additional Power opponent, ensures SEC teams are well prepared to compete and succeed in the College Football Playoff."</p><p>SEC teams are also required to schedule at least one extra high-quality non-conference matchup from the ACC, Big Ten, or Big 12 conferences or Notre Dame each year.</p><p>Four SEC teams - Georgia, Mississippi State, Arkansas, and Kentucky - need to cancel non-conference games next season, according to <a href="https://x.com/bmarcello/status/1958637036744708248">CBS Sports' Brandon Marcello</a>.</p><p>The SEC's decision to go from eight to nine conference football games comes amid constant talks about revamping the current College Football Playoff model.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

"Anthony came back and made the improvements in the areas he needed to improve. And by all accounts, he had a great camp."</p><p>Richardson said Tuesday he respects coach Shane Steichen's decision to go with Jones.</p><p>The 2023 No. 4 pick is having a roller-coaster start to his NFL career. Indianapolis benched the oft-injured passer for two games last season, with Steichen saying he wanted the 23-year-old signal-caller more invested.</p><p>The Colts lost two games with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/2945" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/2945">Joe Flacco</a> under center in 2024 before turning to Richardson again.</p><p>"When they needed a big play last year, whose hands did they put the ball in? Anthony's," Jackson said.</p><p>Richardson finished the 2024 season with 11 appearances, completing 47.7% of his passes for 1,814 yards and eight touchdowns against 12 interceptions.</p><p>Indianapolis signed Jones to a one-year contract this offseason and held a QB1 competition at training camp. Richardson and Jones each started one preseason game.</p>

Here's a look at trade candidates and players who could be released before each club solidifies its roster.</p><h3>Kenny Pickett, QB, Browns</h3><p>Deshaun Watson won't play in 2025, so four quarterbacks headline Browns training camp: Joe Flacco, rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, and Pickett. With Cleveland unlikely to carry four QBs in the regular season, someone has to go. Flacco is the favorite to start and offers plenty of experience ahead of his 18th season. Gabriel is a third-round pick, and Sanders - a Round 5 selection - turned heads in his first preseason start. Pickett, who has 25 starts under his belt, landed with Cleveland in an offseason trade. Doubs was frustrated with his usage last year, so you have to wonder how Green Bay views the 25-year-old ahead of a contract year. The club would get $3.4 million in cap savings by moving him.</p><h3>Taysom Hill, TE, Saints</h3><p>The versatile Hill turns 35 this month and is still recovering from a torn ACL that will likely sideline him for at least part of the 2025 season. Additionally, the rebuilding Saints and first-year coach Kellen Moore should be trying to create opportunities for younger players. If Hill successfully recovers from his injury, a playoff contender could benefit from scooping up the NFL's best Swiss Army knife. He's scored 44 scrimmage touchdowns while passing for 11 touchdowns since entering the league. He also injured his foot before the preseason opener. Bourne managed a breakout campaign under Josh McDaniels in 2021, but the wideout's reunion with the coordinator could be short-lived.</p><h3>Devin Singletary, RB, Giants</h3><p>When the Giants signed Singletary to a three-year contract in 2024, they expected him to be a steady hand for an offense that lacked an identity. But Tyrone Tracy Jr. surged to the top of the depth chart instead. New York has since added rookie Cam Skattebo, and Dante Miller is turning heads this preseason, making Singletary a potential casualty of the team's youth movement. The Giants would free up $1.5 million in much-needed cap space by cutting the soon-to-be 28-year-old.</p><h3>Darren Waller, TE, Dolphins</h3><p>Nearly two years removed from meaningful snaps, it's difficult to envision Waller regaining the form that helped him become a Pro Bowler in 2020. The veteran admitted he was unenthused during his one-year stint with the Giants in 2023 after they asked him to block more, but he says he rediscovered his passion during his brief retirement. The Dolphins need a tight end after trading Jonnu Smith. Waller is attempting to get up to speed, but he hasn't even been practicing, so don't be surprised if the Dolphins pull the plug on this project. Moving on from the 32-year-old would save Miami $2 million that the club is better served using elsewhere. </p><h3>Tyler Higbee, TE, Rams</h3><p>Higbee was once a staple of the Rams' offense, but he missed most of 2024 while rehabbing from a torn ACL. His snaps, targets, and maybe even roster spot could now be in danger with Colby Parkinson, Davis Allen, and Terrance Ferguson nipping at his heels. L.A. drafted Ferguson in the second round in April, presumably to serve as Higbee's replacement sooner or later. Higbee is on the wrong side of 30 and entering a contract year. <p>Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay provided a positive update about <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/680" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/680">Matthew Stafford</a>, saying the veteran quarterback didn't have any throwing limitations during a workout Saturday morning.</p><p>"It was awesome. He looked good. He threw the ball really well," McVay told reporters, including <a href="https://x.com/IraGorawara/status/1954368304937902270">Ira Gorawara of the Los Angeles Times</a>. "There was no limitations in terms of the types of throws. Deep, intermediate, short. ... He felt really good."</p><p>McVay added that Stafford threw more than 60 passes during his workout.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The two-time Pro Bowl passer is dealing with an aggravated disk in his back, which has kept him out of team drills since the start of training camp. The Rams remain optimistic about his Week 1 availability.</p><p>Stafford is scheduled to resume individual drills next week, according to <a href="https://x.com/sarahbarshop/status/1954370231323042098">ESPN's Sarah Barshop</a>.</p><p>"We're looking forward to progressing him back into practice on Monday," said McVay, who added that he didn't know whether the veteran QB is still dealing with pain in his back.</p><p>The 37-year-old is under contract for two more years after signing a restructured extension worth $84 million this offseason. Stafford has averaged 3,675 yards and 24 touchdowns per season since joining Los Angeles in 2021. He led the team to a Super Bowl title in his first year in town.</p>

<p>The Buffalo Bills wanted <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/174030" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/174030">James Cook</a> to play Saturday's preseason game against the New York Giants, but the star running back chose to stay on the sideline, head coach Sean McDermott said, according to <a href="https://x.com/_billsoutlet/status/1954289683992580548">Bills Outlet</a>.</p><p>Cook dressed and participated in warmup prior to Buffalo's preseason opener, but he didn't play as his hold-in continues. The two-time Pro Bowler is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has yet to sign an extension with Buffalo.</p><p>"We wanted him to play. I wanted him to play," McDermott said after a 34-25 loss to the Giants. "There's really no change at this point in time from what it was going into this weekend and the game today. ... At this point, due to his situation and the position he's in, he was not willing to play."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>McDermott added that he had a "good conversation" with the tailback.</p><p>While Cook sat out of practices this past week, he took part in walk-throughs and team meetings. The final season of Cook's current deal carries a $5.27-million base salary.</p><p>Bills general manager Brandon Beane <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3320136" href="https://thescore.com/news/3320136">said</a> Monday that he's disappointed in the situation but added the two sides have been negotiating a new deal throughout the offseason.</p><p>Cook ran for 1,009 yards last season and led the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns. He added three more scores in the playoffs.</p><p>The Bills drafted Cook in the second round in 2022.</p>

<p>Colorado head coach Deion Sanders lost his best players on both sides of the ball ahead of the 2025 season, but he still believes the Buffaloes will find ways to win.</p><p>"The next phase is we're going to win differently, but we're going to win," Sanders said, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/45927316/healthy-vibrant-sanders-expects-colorado-win-differently">ESPN's Adam Rittenberg</a>. "I don't know if it's going to be the Hail Marys at the end of the game, but it's going to be hell during the game, because we want to be physical and we want to run the heck out of the football."</p><p>Sanders helped Colorado post a 9-4 record last season, up from 4-8 in his first year with the team. However, Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, starting quarterback Shedeur Sanders, and other starters left Boulder earlier this year. "The (trade request) reaction was crazy. (The extension process) is a little disappointing, but it is what it is. You gotta do what you gotta do, and he's gotta do what's best for him, his family."</p><p>Parsons recently requested a trade from the Cowboys, with the two sides unable to agree on a contract extension. The 26-year-old is in the fifth and final year of his rookie deal.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Cowboys owner Jerry Jones quickly shut down any discussion of moving the team's top defensive player following the request. However, he has said he's not optimistic about Parsons playing in Dallas' season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4.</p><p>Lamb, who faced his own contract saga last year, seemingly criticized the Cowboys in a social media post on Aug. 1, saying they should reward Parsons.</p><p>Dallas has become known for not rushing to sign its top players to long-term deals. Lamb held out of the team's training camp before inking a four-year, $136-million extension weeks before the start of the 2024 regular season.</p><p>The disgruntled Parsons remains with the Cowboys at camp, but the All-Pro defender reportedly missed Thursday's practice due to back tightness.</p>
