Stanford is hiring Troy Taylor as its next head coach, the school announced Saturday.

Taylor led Sacramento State to a 12-1 record as its head coach this season. He joined the Hornets in 2019.

The 54-year-old replaces David Shaw, who spent 12 seasons as the Cardinal's head coach before stepping down in late November. Shaw is the winningest coach in Stanford history.

Taylor is a Sacramento native and spent four seasons as the quarterback at California from 1986-89. He led the Hornets to their first-ever undefeated regular season in 2022. The Hornets were the No. 2 seed in this year's FCS playoffs.

The new Stanford head boss was previously Utah's offensive coordinator from 2017-18. Before that, he was the quarterbacks coach at Eastern Washington.

Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett emerged as a finalist for the job before deciding to remain an analyst for NBC.

Stanford finished with a 3-9 record this year.
