Veteran sharpshooter Klay Thompson is expected to sign with the Miami Heat after clearing waivers following a buyout agreement with the Dallas Mavericks, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.

Thompson spent the past two seasons with the Mavs, averaging 12.9 points and shooting 38.7% from deep across 141 appearances. He shifted to a bench role last campaign after starting 72 games during his first season with the franchise.

"Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization," Mavs president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri said in a statement. "We have tremendous respect for Klay and all that he has accomplished throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward."

Thompson gives the Heat a proven 3-point threat alongside the newly acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo. The 36-year-old is a career 40.9% 3-point shooter and sits fourth on the NBA's all-time list with 2,899 triples.

Miami finished 15th in the Association last season with 13.7 threes per contest.

The Golden State Warriors selected Thompson with the 11th overall pick in 2011. The five-time All-Star played his first 11 seasons with the Warriors and was a key part of their four championship squads.
