The Dallas Mavericks hired Mike Schmitz as their new general manager under Masai Ujiri, the club announced Friday.

Schmitz joins the Mavericks after serving as an assistant GM with the Portland Trail Blazers for four seasons.

"I have tremendous respect for Masai, this ownership group, and the vision they have for the future of this franchise," Schmitz said in a statement. "I'm excited to get to work alongside the talented people already in place and help build a championship-caliber organization."

Schmitz will team up with Ujiri, who was named team president and alternate governor Monday. The latter led the Toronto Raptors to an NBA title in 2019.

"Mike is one of the most respected evaluators and basketball minds in the NBA," Ujiri said. "He brings intelligence, discipline, humility, and a relentless work ethic to everything he does. Just as importantly, he understands how to build an aligned, collaborative culture across every part of a basketball organization. We are building something special in Dallas, and Mike will be a major part of that vision."

Dallas produced a disappointing 26-56 record this season. However, last year's No. 1 overall pick, Cooper Flagg, earned Rookie of the Year honors in April, and the Mavericks hold a 29% chance of securing a top-four selection in Sunday's draft lottery.
