Allen 'would've went back' to Celtics if they signed KD in 2016

Ray Allen spent five seasons with the Boston Celtics, playing a key role in the franchise winning an NBA championship in 2008.

Allen wound up departing Boston for Miami following the 2012 campaign, going on to win another title in 2013. That decision didn't sit well with multiple Celtics teammates at the time.

Reflecting on his time donning the green and white, the NBA's all-time leader in career 3-pointers said that had the team successfully recruited Kevin Durant in free agency, he would have considered a return to Boston in 2016.

"I had a conversation with (Celtics GM Danny Ainge) and I told him this was my last-ditch effort. I would’ve went back,” Allen told WEEI's Ordway, Merloni, and Fauria on Thursday.

"This was when Kevin Durant was a free agent. He was thinking about going to Boston. And I said, 'Hey, if you guys land Kevin, I would certainly look at lacing them back up one more time and try to make something good happen here in Boston,'" Allen continued.

Unfortunately for Allen, he never got an opportunity to capture a third ring. He retired in 2016 through a letter penned in The Players' Tribune, less than two years after playing his last NBA game during the 2014 postseason.

Durant joined the juggernaut Golden State Warriors that summer instead, helping to extend a run of dominance resulting in three championship parades and five consecutive Finals berths.
