Change appears to be in the air for the Seattle Mariners.
Manager Dan Wilson is unlikely to return in 2027 after his team underachieved this season, sources told Adam Jude of the Seattle Times.
Wilson, a member of the Mariners Hall of Fame based on his playing career in the 1990s, took over in the dugout after Scott Servais was fired in August 2024. At the time of his hiring, he had no professional managerial experience and was working for the team as a special assignment coordinator. Wilson had previously worked in the organization as a minor-league catching coordinator and broadcaster.
The 57-year-old had a successful first full season managing, as he guided the Mariners to 90 wins and their first AL West title in 24 years. They made it to Game 7 of the ALCS - the first Game 7 in franchise history - but were eliminated by the Toronto Blue Jays. For his efforts, Wilson finished third in AL Manager of the Year voting.
It's been an entirely different story for Wilson and the Mariners in 2026. Although his team came into the season as favorites to win the AL West once again, Seattle entered Saturday five games back of the division-leading Rangers and Astros with eight contests remaining. The Mariners were atop the division on July 5; since then, the team's gone 25-38 to fall 10 games below .500 and lose ground in the wild-card race.
Wilson signed a multi-year contract upon taking over as manager. Full details of his deal are unknown.
While Wilson's fate appears to be sealed, those of general manager Justin Hollander and president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto remain up in the air, Jude reports. There's been no indication that a front-office overhaul is coming, although final decisions have yet to be made, sources told Jude.
Dipoto, who took over as GM in 2015 and was promoted to his current role in 2023, built the team that ended Seattle's 21-year playoff drought in 2022. However, the Mariners have only made the playoffs twice in his 11 seasons heading up their baseball operations. They also remain the only active franchise to have never appeared in a World Series.
Wilson and Servais are the only two managers hired by Dipoto since he arrived in Seattle.
