The Atlanta Braves attempted to deal right-hander Spencer Strider to the Texas Rangers for two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom before the trade deadline, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
However, the swap never materialized because deGrom reportedly blocked the move with his no-trade clause. He said at the time that he signed with the Rangers to help them win a World Series and wanted to continue to work toward that goal.
Strider, who's been sidelined since mid-June, is owed $44 million through 2028. He also has a $22-million club option with a $5-million buyout for 2029.
The 27-year-old has dealt with multiple long-term injuries after finishing fourth in 2023 NL Cy Young voting. Since 2025, he's authored a 4.66 ERA with 1.39 WHIP and 9.7 K/9 over 164 1/3 innings (31 starts).
DeGrom is coming off the best start of his season, having allowed just one hit with zero walks and 12 strikeouts over six shutout innings Thursday versus the Seattle Mariners. The five-time All-Star owns a 3.80 ERA with 3.02 FIP and 11.2 K/9 over 149 1/3 innings (28 starts) during his age-38 campaign.
