Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story underwent a successful sports hernia repair, the team announced Friday.

Story weighed his options in recent days after landing on the 10-day injury list and ultimately decided to have surgery. The two-time All-Star said last week that a basic recovery timeline would be around 6-10 weeks, although interim manager Chad Tracy declined to speculate on a return date.

"I won't put a timeline on it," Tracy said Friday, according to MassLive's Chris Cotillo. "He's going to be down for a while. That's the easiest way to say it. There's a range depending on how he responds and reacts to it."

Story has been dealing with the hernia issue since spring training.

The 33-year-old has battled several injuries since joining the Red Sox in 2022, playing only 163 games through his first three seasons in Boston. He did stay healthy in '25, hitting 25 home runs with 96 RBIs in 157 appearances.

Story is hitting .206 with three homers in 41 games this season.

While Story is out, Boston will likely slide second baseman Marcelo Mayer over to shortstop, Tracy said. Mayer is starting Friday's game at the keystone, and the team is hoping he'll make the switch Sunday.

The Red Sox drafted Mayer as a shortstop. He proceeded to play 269 minor-league games there before moving off the position in deference to Story upon reaching the majors. The 23-year-old told Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald that shortstop is "home to me" and "where I'm most comfortable" defensively, although he's doing some work to reacclimate himself to the position.

"There's a little bit more work (infield coach José Flores) wants to do with him, but I definitely think you'll see more of him there," Tracy said of Mayer. "Does that mean he'll play there every single day? Maybe not, but we're definitely going to explore that."

Boston will use a combination of Andruw Monasterio, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Nick Sogard at second when Mayer is at shortstop, Tracy added.

The Red Sox entered play Friday with a 22-27 record, good for fourth place in the competitive AL East.
