Nationals sign Hernandez to 1-year deal reportedly worth $4M

The Washington Nationals signed former Gold Glove second baseman Cesar Hernandez to a one-year contract, the team announced Tuesday.

Hernandez's deal has a $4-million base salary and contains another $1 million worth of incentives, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

The 31-year-old switch-hitter appeared in 149 games last season, split between Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox. Hernandez's slash line of .232/.308/.386 was the worst of his career, but he set career highs in homers (21) and RBIs (62). He took a step back defensively a year after winning his first Gold Glove, tallying minus-11 defensive runs saved.

Hernandez will presumably slot in as the Nationals' starting second baseman. They also have youngster Luis Garcia at the position.

For his career, Hernandez is a .270/.345/.384 hitter with 70 homers and 335 RBIs across 1,039 games between three teams.
