Pete Rose bewildered by Gallo's Ks: 'Ray Charles wouldn't strike out that much'

Pete Rose does not think too highly of Joey Gallo. Major League Baseball's hit king recently expressed his feelings about the New York Yankees outfielder's all-or-nothing approach following the Bronx Bombers' recent playoff exit against the Boston Red Sox.

"That was the worst (expletive) lineup they could have put on the field," Rose told USA Today's Bob Nightengale, according to NESN. "Their six, seven, eight, nine hitters were all out-men. They had to have (Aaron) Judge and (Giancarlo) Stanton do something. If they didn't, all of the pressure was on Joey Gallo. You saw how that worked out."

Rose added of Gallo, "How does someone who didn't play every day strike out 213 times? Ray Charles wouldn't strike out that much. I just can't imagine striking out 213 times without killing myself."

New York started Brett Gardner, Gio Urshela, Kyle Higashioka, and Andrew Velazquez as its six-through-nine hitters against Boston in the AL wild-card game. The foursome went a combined 1-for-9 in the contest.

As for Gallo, his 213 strikeouts did come in an everyday role, with the two-time All-Star appearing in 153 games this season for the Yankees and Texas Rangers.

However, 88 of those strikeouts came in just 58 games with New York, leading to a 38.6% strikeout rate - the second-highest mark in the majors from July 29 to Oct. 3.
