Captain's picks announced for Presidents Cup teams

The 2024 Presidents Cup rosters are set. United States Team captain Jim Furyk and International Team captain Mike Weir announced their six captain's picks Tuesday.

Here are the full rosters, with the captain's picks noted in brackets (CP). Ranks are according to the Official World Golf Rankings.

Keegan Bradley was previously named an assistant captain for the U.S., but now that he's made the team as a player, Furyk said a new assistant will be hired, per SiriusXM's Jason Sobel.

Justin Thomas (World No. 30) is the most notable omission from the American squad, missing out on a team competition for the first time in eight years. Thomas' friend and frequent international competition playing partner, Jordan Spieth, won't compete either after undergoing wrist surgery Saturday.

Billy Horschel (No. 25), Akshay Bhatia (No. 28), Cameron Young (No. 29), Nick Dunlap (No. 35), and Chris Kirk (No. 40) were also left off the American team.

"There are a bunch of guys that I would want on this team. It was a difficult decision with JT, definitely a difficult call to make," Furyk said, according to the Associated Press' Doug Ferguson. "But as a captain, you're trying to make the best decision, put the best 12 guys together, fit the puzzle pieces together, the pairings together."

Weir, meanwhile, dipped into his home country's talent pool for the International picks, naming three Canadians to the roster. Two notable Canadians won't be joining the squad in Quebec this fall, though, as Adam Hadwin (World No. 47) and Nick Taylor (No. 51) were left off the team. Weir, a native of Sarnia, Ontario, got emotional discussing the difficulty of those cuts.

"I can't tell you how tough those calls were," he said. "Those guys, I respect those guys. I love those guys. They're like brothers, you know, they're Canadians. That's the toughest part of being a captain."

Australian Cameron Davis (World No. 41) was the highest-ranked eligible player excluded from the International roster.

LIV Golf players are ineligible to compete, leaving the International side without the likes of Cam Smith, Joaquin Niemann, and Louis Oosthuizen. Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka are the most prominent American LIV players.

The Presidents Cup runs Sept. 24-29 at Royal Montreal Golf Club.

The United States has won the event 12 of 14 times. The Internationals won in 1998 and tied in 2003.
