And while an extension for the pending unrestricted free agent isn't part of this deal, I'd be shocked if the two sides don't eventually come to an agreement. The extremely aggressive Golden Knights front office always seems to get what it wants.</p><p>Andersson immediately became a logical trade target for Vegas after Alex Pietrangelo announced in June that he's unlikely to resume his playing career due to hip injuries. Pietrangelo's absence left a gaping hole on the right side of Vegas' blue line, but Andersson is more than capable of filling it. He's a strong puck-mover and great shot-blocker who competes extremely hard. In 216 games together from 2021-24, Andersson and Hanifin controlled 54% of the expected goals and 56.8% of the actual goals when on the ice together at five-on-five, per <a href="https://www.naturalstattrick.com/">Natural Stat Trick</a>.</p><p>Hanifin and Whitecloud never jelled as well as hoped, but Hanifin and Andersson are a strong enough No. 1 pairing to win a Stanley Cup. The rest of Vegas' defense corps slots in nicely behind them: Shea Theodore and Brayden McNabb (when healthy) make a stellar second pair, and Jeremy Lauzon and Kaedan Korczak are an enviable third pairing.</p><p>The Golden Knights need to get some saves from their goaltenders in order to go on a deep playoff run, but few - if any - netminders in the NHL have a better blue line in front of them.</p><p><strong>Grade: </strong>A-</p><h3>Calgary Flames</h3><p>The Flames were placed in a difficult position and made out pretty well, all things considered. After the deal, general manager Craig Conroy revealed that Andersson told the club Sunday morning that he wasn't willing to sign an extension as part of any trade. Conroy said that some teams reduced their offers or withdrew them altogether in response. That significantly limited Calgary's chances of creating a bidding war.</p><p>There's also inherent risk in waiting it out. What if Vegas pivoted to another target? What if Andersson got hurt between now and the deadline? He'll play hard minutes higher in Calgary's lineup out of necessity, which isn't a bad thing for a rebuilding club. It could also boost his trade value. Whitecloud is signed through 2027-28 at a very reasonable $2.75-million cap hit. The Flames could get a decent return if they decide to move Whitecloud at the 2027 or 2028 trade deadline.</p><p>Wiebe, a 6-foot-3 defenseman at the University of North Dakota, isn't a highly touted prospect. It'll be a nice bonus for the Flames if the 2022 seventh-round pick becomes an NHL regular at any point.</p><p>For Calgary, the primary assets are the picks. The Flames already own the Golden Knights' 2026 first-rounder as part of the Hanifin trade. Now they have their 2027 first-rounder and potentially their 2028 first-rounder if Vegas wins the Cup this year. This trade would become a massive win for both sides if the Golden Knights are the last team standing this year.</p><p><strong>Grade: </strong>B</p>

He racked up nine goals and 31 assists in 64 appearances in 2024-25.</p><p>Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving employed Hamilton during his time with the Calgary Flames, although he traded him to Carolina in 2018.</p><p>Hamilton spent three years with the Hurricanes before joining the Devils as a free agent in 2021. "The fan initiative program that we did last year, what they wanted, they want to see the best play against the best. "If he's good, he's good. If he plays great, he plays great. If he wins tournaments, he wins tournaments. There's no reason why we should hold him back."</p><p>However, Woods' return to the PGA TOUR is far less clear after he underwent lumbar disc replacement surgery in October. The 50-year-old said Tuesday he's been cleared to hit short irons and mid irons, but nothing more.</p><p>"Whenever that time comes when I start hitting drivers and I start playing at home and start doing all the different things, I will have been away from the game for a year and a half," Woods said. "So I will be very rusty. And so there's a lot that goes into it, so my prep is going to have to be a little bit different from my other procedures I've had in the past. I've had to stay a lot more patient with myself. I get sore faster, I guess because I'm 50. And that happens."</p><p>Woods last played in a PGA TOUR event at the 2024 Open Championship.</p>

<p>LIV Golf appears to be keeping three of its biggest stars despite watching <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1461" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1461">Brooks Koepka</a> <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3453796" href="https://thescore.com/news/3453796">return</a> to the PGA TOUR.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/437" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/437">Bryson DeChambeau</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1111" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1111">Jon Rahm</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/891" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/891">Cam Smith</a> - the only other LIV golfers eligible to return to the PGA TOUR under the circuit's new Returning Member Program - each announced their intentions to stay with LIV Golf this year.</p><p>"I'm contracted through 2026, so excited about this year," DeChambeau said at Tuesday's LIV captains press conference, according to <a href="https://x.com/Schrock_And_Awe/status/2011186573606555965">Golf.com's Josh Schrock.</a></p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"I'm not planning on going anywhere, so very similar answer to what Bryson gave," Rahm added.</p><p>"I made a decision to come here, and I stand by it," Smith told <a href="https://x.com/EvinPriest/status/2011180155952382115">Golf Digest's Evin Priest</a>.</p><p>The PGA TOUR announced Monday that the return protocol is open until Feb. 2, but only for golfers who have won a major championship or The Players between 2022 and 2025. Only Koepka, DeChambeau, Rahm, and Smith meet the criteria.</p><p>The TOUR added that it's also "a one-time, defined window." </p><p>"Once the door closes, there is no promise that this path will be available again," PGA TOUR CEO Brian Rolapp said.</p><p>Koepka must forfeit his stake in the TOUR's Player Equity Program for five years (an estimated $50 million to $85 million in potential earnings) and make a $5-million charitable donation as part of his reinstatement.</p><p>"I was surprised," DeChambeau said of Koepka's exit, according to <a href="https://www.todays-golfer.com/news-and-events/tour-news/bryson-dechambeau-future-liv-golf-pga-tour-youtube/">Ben Parsons of Today's Golfer</a>. "I didn't know he'd be willing to give that much back. That's everybody's prerogative."</p>

<p>Dougie Hamilton's time with the New Jersey Devils could soon be coming to an end. </p><p>The Devils made the veteran blue-liner a healthy scratch Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets. Hamilton's agent, J.P. Barry, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3452077" href="https://thescore.com/news/3452077">called</a> the move a "calculated" business decision, adding that the team has tried to trade him dating back to the 2025 NHL Draft.</p><p>Trading Hamilton will be complicated. He's under contract for two more seasons after 2025-26 with a $9-million cap hit. His pact also includes a 10-team trade list, though Hamilton is apparently willing to be flexible on that front.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"We have made it clear to the Devils that we will consider teams outside our list and other creative ways to get to a team that is mutually acceptable," Barry said.</p><p>But in order for the Devils to trade Hamilton, they'll likely have to retain a significant portion of his contract, attach a sweetener that would entice a club to take on the entirety of his deal, or take back an equally undesirable contract.</p><p>Hamilton is 32 years old and in the midst of his worst season in over a decade. His foot speed has declined, he takes a lot of penalties, and he's not the dangerous offensive threat he once was.</p><p>That's not to say it's <em>all</em> bad though. Hamilton's underlying numbers this season are OK. Perhaps he'd be willing to reconsider now that the Sharks are in a playoff spot and the Devils are floundering.</p><p>It would be understandable if San Jose didn't want to alter its team chemistry. However, this is a club that has just just two defensemen signed beyond 2025-26 (Dmitry Orlov and Sam Dickinson) and needed to add the final year of Carey Price's contract just to reach the cap floor this season.</p><p>The Sharks will need to bring in defensemen in the summer, and the list of pending unrestricted free-agent blue-liners isn't the most exciting bunch, especially considering many of them will likely re-sign before July 1. Adding to a veteran group without sacrificing the future would be the best of both worlds for GM Barry Trotz, and that's exactly what a trade for Hamilton could entail.</p><p>Nashville has $11.9 million in cap space and would provide an easy fit for Hamilton in the lineup. He'd be an upgrade over all three of its right-shot defensemen (Nick Perbix, Justin Barron, and Nick Blankenburg). Hamilton could elevate his game playing alongside Roman Josi or Brady Skjei, a former teammate with the Carolina Hurricanes.</p><p>A rebuild could be inevitable in Nashville in the coming years. Even though Hamilton enjoyed three strong seasons with the Flames from 2015-18, it would be understandable if he vetoed a move there. The club's chances of being competitive in the next few years are low, and Calgary's harsh winters aren't overly inviting. But the Flames should absolutely welcome a reunion if they can get Hamilton on board.</p><p>They need to weaponize their $18 million in cap space to help collect prospects and draft picks to advance their rebuild. The Flames could theoretically turn Hamilton into another pick or prospect in a year or two if he plays reasonably well and they retain half his salary.</p><p>There will be minutes for Hamilton on the right side of Calgary's blue line, assuming pending UFA Rasmus Andersson gets moved before the deadline. While the front office <em>should</em> want the team to bottom out this year, it likely doesn't want to put too much on the plates of young defensemen Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz.</p>

<p>The St. Louis Blues signed defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/8601" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/8601">Philip Broberg</a> to a six-year extension with an average annual value of $8 million, the team announced Saturday.</p><p>The 24-year-old was scheduled to be a restricted free agent at the end of the campaign.</p><p>Broberg, who was chosen to represent Sweden at the 2026 Olympics, has established himself as a key piece of the present and future for the Blues. He leads the team in average time on ice this season despite being their second-youngest everyday defenseman.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 6-foot-4 Swede has managed two goals and 12 assists in 45 games this year. He notched 29 points across 68 appearances in 2024-25, his first campaign with the Blues.</p><p>Broberg ranks in the 95th percentile of <a href="https://evolving-hockey.com/">Evolving-Hockey</a>'s defensive value this season and 86th percentile in overall value.</p><p>His new contract will make him St. Louis' highest-paid defenseman and tied for third-highest-paid player overall when it kicks in next season.</p><p>St. Louis acquired Broberg in the 2024 offseason, signing him to a two-year deal with a $4.58-million cap hit as a restricted free agent while he was with the Edmonton Oilers, who opted not to match the offer sheet. "Linus is away from our team for personal reasons, and he has the entire organization's support.</p><p>"We asked that people respect his privacy, but clearly that request was not heard by the lowest forms of trolls and sick people who scour the internet. We are disgusted that outside forces are attempting to disrupt our hockey club. This statement will put an end to the ridiculous speculation that has spread online."</p><p>The Senators announced Dec. 28 that Ullmark was stepping away from the team indefinitely due to a personal matter. The club moved him to a non-roster spot Thursday to activate forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1077" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1077">Lars Eller</a> from injured reserve.</p><p>Ullmark last played Dec. 27 against the Toronto Maple Leafs, allowing four goals on 14 shots in a 7-5 loss. <p>The Tennessee Titans will interview Jason Garrett on Friday for their head coaching vacancy, sources told <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/2008672987483115783?s=20">ESPN's Adam Schefter</a>.</p><p>Garrett served as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2010-19, compiling an 85-67 regular-season record and 2-3 postseason mark.</p><p>After leaving the Cowboys, the 59-year-old took over as the New York Giants' offensive coordinator for two seasons. The Giants' offense ranked 31st in both campaigns.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Garrett has been an analyst at NBC since 2022.</p><p>The Titans fired head coach Brian Callahan six games into the 2025 season and named Mike McCoy as his interim replacement for the remainder of the year.</p><p>Tennessee has also reportedly requested head coaching interviews with Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.</p>

<p>Sweden prevented a late rally from Czechia to win the 2026 World Junior Championship with a 4-2 victory in the gold-medal game on Monday.</p><p>It's Sweden's third gold medal in the tournament's history and first since 2012.</p><p>Czechia scored two late goals to pull within one, but was unable to notch the equalizer before Sweden added an empty-netter to seal the victory.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Sweden dominated for most of the game, building a 2-0 lead after two periods with a shorty from <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wjhc/players/17048" href="https://thescore.com/wjhc/players/17048">Casper Juustovaara</a> and a power-play marker by <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wjhc/players/16213" href="https://thescore.com/wjhc/players/16213">Victor Eklund</a> while holding Czechia to just 11 shots through 40 minutes. </p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wjhc/players/17033" href="https://thescore.com/wjhc/players/17033">Sascha Boumedienne</a> added a third goal for the Tre Kronor early in the third period off a great pass from <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wjhc/players/17053" href="https://thescore.com/wjhc/players/17053">Ivar Stenberg</a> and Sweden looked to be in cruise control.</p><p>However, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wjhc/players/15119" href="https://thescore.com/wjhc/players/15119">Adam Jiricek</a> gave Czechia life with a goal at the 17:36 mark of the third period. With the Czechs pressing, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wjhc/players/17071" href="https://thescore.com/wjhc/players/17071">Matej Kubiesa</a> found twine with 24 seconds left in the game. That's as close as the Czechs got before Stenberg scored the empty-netter.</p><p>Sweden was dominant from start to finish in the tournament, posting a perfect 7-0-0-0 record to end its 14-year gold-medal drought.</p><p>Czechia, meanwhile, hasn't claimed gold since winning back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2001.</p>
