<p>Edmonton Oilers defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3124" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3124">Darnell Nurse</a> will have a hearing Tuesday night for cross-checking Los Angeles Kings forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/9210" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/9210">Quinton Byfield</a> during Monday's meeting between Pacific Division rivals, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced.</p><p>Nurse was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for hitting Byfield in the back of the head and neck while he was down on the ice. Byfield was not on the bench to start the third frame and was later ruled out with an upper-body injury.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

It was a chippy clash between the Round 1 opponents, with the Oilers being assessed 53 penalty minutes and the Kings getting handed 16 through the first two periods.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Los Angeles pulled netminder <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/2003" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/2003">Darcy Kuemper</a> after forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/4520" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/4520">Adrian Kempe</a> put the game further out of reach with the club's final goal in the 5-0 victory.</p><p>Edmonton was down several key players in the matchup, including <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/4560" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/4560">Connor McDavid</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3948" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3948">Leon Draisaitl</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1723" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1723">Zach Hyman</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1993" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1993">Mattias Ekholm</a>.</p><p>"I think they just have their 'B squad' in trying to hurt us," Kings center <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/2083" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/2083">Phillip Danault</a> said during the second intermission, per <a href="https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/perry-on-danault-accusing-oilers-of-running-b-squad-to-injure-kings-what-the-f~3115299">TSN</a>.</p><p>"What the f----?," Oilers winger <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/34" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/34">Corey Perry</a> responded postgame. "What do you want us to do? Did he not look at what's happened to us the last couple weeks? We're not out there to hurt anybody."</p><p>The Oilers and Kings are locked into a first-round matchup for the fourth straight year. Edmonton has one more game left in the regular season, while Los Angeles has two more contests remaining.</p><p>The Kings secured home-ice advantage with Monday's win. </p><p>Nurse has been suspended three times in his 11-year NHL career, including a one-game ban for headbutting Danault during the 2022 playoffs. He also sat out one contest in the 2023 postseason after taking a late instigator penalty against the Vegas Golden Knights.</p><p>The blue-liner's first suspension was for three games for serving as an aggressor during an altercation with then-San Jose Sharks blue-liner Roman Polak in 2016.</p>

<p>Kenny Albert will succeed Sam Rosen.</p><p>MSG Networks <a href="http://780698">announced</a> Tuesday that it named Albert the lead TV play-by-play announcer for its coverage of the New York Rangers.</p><p>Rosen, who's been calling Rangers games since 1984, announced prior to the start of the 2024-25 campaign that he would retire after the season.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Albert, the son of legendary broadcaster Marv Albert, is currently the play-by-play lead for the NHL on TNT. He's also previously called NFL, MLB, and NBA games.</p>

He made bogeys on 11 and 14 and a disastrous double-bogey on 13 in which he splashed a 90-yard approach into Rae's Creek.</p><p>Epic birdies on 15 and 17 gave McIlroy a chance to close out the Masters with a par on the 72nd hole, but he missed a five-foot par putt after his approach found the sand. He won on the first playoff hole with a birdie after stuffing his approach within two feet.</p><p>"I didn't make it easy today. I was nervous. It was one of the toughest days I've ever had on the golf course," he said. "In a funny way, I feel like the double-bogey at the first (hole) sort of settled my nerves."</p><p>The victory marks McIlroy's first major championship since the 2014 PGA Championship. He heard all the noise and felt all the pressure about whether he'd be able to become the sixth man ever to win all four majors.</p><p>"I've carried that burden since August 2014," McIlroy said. "It's been nearly 11 years. I'm not just about winning my next major, but the career grand slam, trying to join a group of five players to do it, watching a lot of my peers get green jackets in the process, it's been difficult."</p><p>Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Gene Sarazen are the only other players to accomplish the feat.</p><p>McIlroy came within striking distance of capturing the green jacket on numerous occasions, garnering top-five finishes at Augusta in 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2022.</p><p>Several heartbreaking finishes at other majors - including the 2024 U.S. Open - make this victory extra sweet for Rory.</p><p>"It's a dream come true," McIlroy said. "I've dreamt about that moment for as long as I could remember." </p>

Buium is coming off an impressive college career in which he tallied 98 points in 83 games across two seasons with the Pioneers. He helped Denver win the 2024 national championship and was a 2025 Hobey Baker Award finalist.</p><p>Buium also helped the United States capture back-to-back gold medals at the World Junior Championship in 2024 and 2025, recording five goals and six assists in 14 games across the two tournaments.</p><p>The 19-year-old could be in Minnesota's lineup as early as Tuesday's season finale against the Anaheim Ducks.</p>

He discussed his NHL journey with <a href="https://x.com/CHSN_Blackhawks/status/1911194362463010883">Chicago Sports Network's Darren Pang</a> prior to the contest.</p><p>"You're going to make me tear up, I got to get ready for a game," an emotional Martinez said, his voice trembling. "Obviously a lot of different emotions today. Just very thankful, very appreciative."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Blackhawks have two more games left, but Saturday was their last home game. It's also the final appearance for Chicago forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/921" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/921">Pat Maroon</a>, who announced his retirement plans earlier in the campaign.</p><p>Martinez, 37, won three Stanley Cups in his career: in 2012 and 2014 with the Kings and in 2023 with the Vegas Golden Knights.</p><p>His contributions to the 2014 Kings cannot be overstated. How safe should Ovi feel with the record, though?</p><p>A handful of active players have outside chances of catching The Great 8. Of course, it will be no easy task, requiring remarkable production, health, longevity, and even a bit of luck.</p><p>It's important to remember this isn't just a race to 896,<em> </em>considering Ovechkin likely isn't done. He still has one more year on his contract, so assuming he honors that, the record could stand around 930 - and that's a modest estimate. If he plays a few more years, 1,000 is well within reach. Several numbers stack up favorably for the Toronto Maple Leafs captain. Matthews ranks fifth all time in goals per game (minimum 200 goals) at 0.64<em><strong>.</strong></em> Ovechkin is seventh at 0.60.</p><p>Through his age-27 season, Ovechkin potted 371 goals in 601 games for a per-game mark of 0.617. Matthews has suited up in 24 more games,<em><strong> </strong></em>in part because he debuted at 19, whereas Ovechkin had to wait until he was 20. Coincidentally, they share the same birthday: Sept. 17.</p><p>Matthews hasn't displayed the year-to-year consistency of Ovechkin, but he's shown his ceiling is much higher. While Ovi scored more than 56 goals only once - when he bagged a career-high 65 in 2007-08 - Matthews has already done so twice, scoring 69 a year ago and 60 in just 73 games in 2021-22. He's in the midst of a down year, but would anyone be surprised if he flirted with 70 again next year? He's also great at tips, deflections, and using his 6-foot-3 frame to box out defenders in front of the net for rebounds.</p><p>Also working in Matthews' favor is the potential of playing alongside a superb playmaker in Mitch Marner for the majority of his career. That's a big "if" with Marner a pending unrestricted free agent, and Matthews due up in 2028, but it's possible.</p><p><strong>Why he probably won't: </strong>Injuries. Matthews hasn't suffered any serious, career-threatening ailments, but he's been banged up enough to make it fair to wonder if he has the durability to get across the finish line. He already ranks 20th all time with 0.51 goals per game.</p><p>Draisaitl seems to keep getting better, too. He's arguably in the midst of his best season, leading the NHL with 52 goals - eight more than second place William Nylander and Tage Thompson.</p><p>If Connor McDavid, a 2026 UFA, ends up staying in Edmonton for the long haul, it would certainly help Draisaitl's odds. McDavid, after all, is an all-time great playmaker. The two have outstanding chemistry together, particularly on the power play. A full-time move to the wing alongside McDavid, which isn't out of the question at some point, would certainly help Draisaitl's scoring output into his 30s.</p><p><strong>Why he probably won't: </strong>He might never recover from his slow start. Draisaitl didn't score 30 goals in a season until his age-23 campaign. He totaled only 75 goals through his first four seasons. His one-timer from the left half wall on the power play is not quite Ovi-caliber, but it's in the next tier.</p><p>Pastrnak has already shown his ceiling is sky high with a 61-goal season in 2022-23. His floor is essentially 40 goals at this point. Obviously that won't get him close to the record, but mix in a few more seasons close to 60, and there's a chance. Pastrnak ranks 18th all time with 0.52 goals per game.</p><p><strong>Why he probably won't: </strong>He doesn't have enough help. Pastrnak has essentially been a one-man offense for a poor Bruins team this season, and Boston boasts arguably the worst farm system in the league. Maybe that could change this offseason if the Bruins are able to draft someone with dynamic playmaking abilities, such as Michael Misa, but that's no sure thing. McDavid is a pass-first player by nature. Since the start of 2023-24, he's averaged 34 goals and 264 shots per 82 games.<em><strong> </strong></em>The more time he spends alongside Draisaitl, the more passive he becomes, too. But once he gets bigger and stronger, his lethal wrister could result in some 40-plus goal seasons in the near future.</p><p>Celebrini wasn't as hyped as Bedard entering the NHL, but he's greatly exceeded expectations in his rookie season, scoring 24 goals in 66 games. It's not as if he's shooting the lights out, either, as his 10.6% shooting percentage is right around league average. If the Sharks phenom can build on this season moving forward, look out.</p><p>Michkov came over from Russia earlier than expected, which certainly helps his case. He's flourished in his rookie season with 24 goals in 76 games. As a winger, he could theoretically have an easier time becoming a pure goal-scorer with fewer defensive responsibilities.</p><p><strong>Why they probably won't: </strong>It's too much projecting. None of them have even scored 30 goals in a season, let alone the 40-plus per year it would take to catch Ovechkin. They have only 90 goals combined between the three of them. </table></div></figure><p>There would be a lot more noise around Dahlin's tremendous season if it weren't for another disappointing campaign by the Sabres, who extended their NHL-record playoff drought to 14 seasons. Dahlin is tasked with a lot of the heavy lifting on Buffalo's blue line, taking on top-line matchups on a nightly basis. Still, he's still come out with a positive expected goals share and a plus-11 rating. That's hard to do on such a bad team.</p><p>There's a pretty big gap between the top three on our list and the rest of the pack, so Dahlin's chances of being a finalist are likely slim. But he's only 24 years old, so don't be surprised if Dahlin finds himself as a finalist for the first time in 2025-26.</p><h3>3. The 27-year-old has produced zero goals and six assists in his last 13 games during a 4-8-1 stretch by Columbus after serving as the Blue Jackets' engine all season long. </p><p>While the cold streak was enough to knock him down a spot on our list, his overall body of work this season should be enough to make him a Norris finalist for the first time in his career. Werenski's 75 points are the most on Columbus and second among NHL defensemen. He also leads the league in average time on ice. The Blue Jackets would've been nowhere near the playoff hunt if it weren't for their workhorse defenseman.</p><h3>2. In fact, no other skater on the Canucks has even reached the 50-point mark.</p><p>In part because of his slight frame, Hughes garners a reputation as someone who isn't strong defensively. But the numbers say otherwise. His 2.33 expected goals against per 60 minutes at five-on-five is the best of any player on this list, and in the top 30 among all blue-liners with at least 1,000 minutes.</p><h3>1. He sits in the top 10 in points among all NHL skaters.</p><p>Makar's defensive play isn't elite, but it's been good enough to take home the Norris, considering his historic offensive campaign. That weighs heavily on me; I want to do something here," Hughes told <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/hughes-feeling-weight-of-canucks-season-this-year-has-been-hard/">Sportsnet's Iain MacIntyre</a>.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Canucks named Hughes captain ahead of last season following the departure of <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3009" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3009">Bo Horvat</a> at the 2023 trade deadline.</p><p>"They made me captain," Hughes said. Vancouver was officially eliminated from playoff contention Wednesday.</p><p>"This year has been hard, and I want to find a way to put us in a situation where we can be really successful and ultimately win (a Stanley Cup)," Hughes said. "I appreciate the fans and the fact that there's never been a Cup in Vancouver. I definitely think about that quite a bit as well."</p><p>The 2024-25 Canucks season featured no shortage of drama. Hughes admitted earlier in the campaign that the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/7699" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/7699">Elias Pettersson</a>-<a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/2170" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/2170">J.T. Miller</a> saga - which eventually resulted in Miller getting traded to the New York Rangers - was tough to navigate.</p><p>The Canucks drafted Hughes seventh overall in 2018. He can become an unrestricted free agent in 2027 and will be in a position to demand a hefty raise from his current $7.85-million cap hit if his strong play continues over the next two seasons.</p>

<p>The first matchup of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs has been locked in: The Carolina Hurricanes will take on the New Jersey Devils.</p><p>The Devils punched their postseason ticket with the New York Rangers' regulation loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.</p><p>Home-ice advantage for the matchup has yet to be officially determined, but Carolina currently holds a seven-point lead on New Jersey for second place in the Metropolitan Division. The Washington Capitals already clinched the top spot in the division.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Hurricanes and Devils previously met in the second round of the 2023 playoffs, which Carolina won 4-1.</p>

When adversity hits, we just dig in and execute and make things happen."</p><p>Head coach Rick Tocchet believes the victory can go a long way for a club that's endured a tumultuous season.</p><p>"I love the fight in the third period, and to do that is a character win for a lot of guys," he said. "It's huge for development. You're sitting on the bench as a young kid, and it’s 5-2, and it looks like we're going to lose.</p><p>"We score a goal and you see the fight and there wasn't guys hanging their heads. They were up on the bench and alive and cheering guys who were on the ice. That's big for development."</p><p>The Montreal Canadiens previously held the record for latest three-goal comeback in a regular-season game, potting a trio of goals in the final 3:22 against the Ottawa Senators in March 2014.</p><p>The Canucks trailed 3-0 for most of the game before <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/4639" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/4639">Jake DeBrusk</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/15219" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/15219">Victor Mancini</a> scored early in the third period. It's the 10th time in franchise history Vancouver has scored five goals in a third period, one shy of tying the club record for goals in a period.</p><p>The comeback victory kept Vancouver's slim playoff hopes alive. The Canucks sit six points out of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference with four games remaining.</p>
