<p>Edmonton Oilers captain <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/4560" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/4560">Connor McDavid</a> is looking for a major response from his squad after it was blown out 9-1 by the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.</p><p>"I think there's a belief in the room that we'll always figure it out," McDavid told reporters Sunday ahead of Monday's tilt with the Columbus Blue Jackets. "That being said, enough is enough here. We gotta find a way to just put a good game together."</p><p>The Oilers have dropped three games in a row and enter Monday seventh in the Pacific Division with a 6-6-4 record. Slow starts aren't uncommon in Edmonton, as the club began 6-7-1 last season and 2-9-1 the year prior but still made the Stanley Cup Final each time.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>McDavid took accountability for some sluggish starts to games this season.</p><p>"It's been flat. That starts with me as a leader," McDavid said. "It's been maybe not enough energy, not enough emotion in games, and we gotta find a way to bring some of that into the game."</p><p>The three-time Hart Trophy winner added that he's counting on his teammates to find new ways to contribute.</p><p>"We talk about it in here, everybody trying to bring something," McDavid said. "Even if it's not your nature to be the loudest guy, you gotta try a little bit. It's not your nature to play a physical game, you gotta try a little bit. We all gotta have a hand in bringing just a little bit more. Emotionally, physically, and just to our game overall, as a whole. Everybody has just a little bit more to give."</p><p>McDavid ranks tied for sixth in NHL scoring this season with 22 points in 16 games.</p>

<p>Buffalo Sabres forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/12704" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/12704">Jiri Kulich</a> will miss "significant time" with a blood clot, head coach Lindy Ruff announced Monday.</p><p>Ruff added that the issue is "pretty serious" and didn't provide an exact timetable for Kulich's return, though he's hopeful he'll play again this season.</p><p>"I'm gonna say yes," Ruff said. "That really depends on how things go here in the next three or four weeks."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Kulich hasn't played since Nov. 1. He was skating on the team's top line before his absence. <p>Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube is getting fed up with the team's lack of commitment to defensive hockey.</p><p>"We're scoring enough goals every game to win games. We're letting in too many goals," Berube told reporters following Toronto's 5-4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. "Pretty much, this season is, we don't value the defensive side of the puck enough."</p><p>The Maple Leafs rank fifth in the NHL with 3.69 goals per game, but 31st in goals against per game with 3.75. They've allowed 10 goals in their last two games combined.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Toronto held a 4-2 lead on Sunday but Carolina scored three unanswered goals to pull off the comeback. The Hurricanes held a dominant 47-20 edge in the shot department.</p><p>Veteran forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/794" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/794">John Tavares</a> chalked up the collapse to immature play.</p><p>"They're a good hockey team and they put a lot of pressure on you," Tavares said. "At times we did some really good things, earned opportunities, were able to give ourselves the lead, and then our game for whatever reason becomes really immature and we don't manage the game very well."</p><p>Berube didn't necessarily disagree with Tavares' evaluation.</p><p>"Could be immaturity, not a willingness to make the easy play. Turnover after turnover cost us the game tonight," Berube said. "We didn't check anybody tonight. We didn't win any battles tonight. That's two games in a row."</p><p>The Maple Leafs are the NHL's third-oldest team with an average age of 29.24.</p><p>For Berube, becoming a better defensive team is simply a matter of will and execution.</p><p>"For me, it's just a mindset," he said. "If you want to be a good defensive team you gotta check, you gotta have good sticks, you gotta be hard, you gotta win battles, and you gotta have good structure."</p><p>He added, "We don't have any of that right now."</p><p>At five-on-five, the Maple Leafs rank 26th in expected goals share and 20th in expected goals against per 60 minutes, per <a href="https://evolving-hockey.com/stats/team_standard/?_inputs_&amp;std_tm_table=%22On-Ice%22&amp;std_tm_team=%22All%22&amp;std_tm_str=%225v5%22&amp;std_tm_adj=%22Score%20%26%20Venue%22&amp;std_tm_type=%22Rates%22&amp;std_tm_range=%22Seasons%22&amp;std_tm_span=%22Regular%22&amp;std_tm_group=%22Season%22&amp;dir_ttbl=%22Stats%22&amp;std_tm_season=%2220252026%22">Evolving-Hockey</a>. However, with four years left on his contract with a $7-million average annual value, Calgary's hand isn't being forced. His contract also includes a 13-team no-trade list.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 35-year-old leads the Flames with 11 points in 15 appearances this season. He paced the club with 67 points in 82 games last season while scoring a career-high 35 goals.</p><p>If the Flames stay on their current trajectory and wind up as deadline sellers, defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/4723" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/4723">Rasmus Andersson</a> would be their most obvious trade chip since he's in the final year of his contract. The Flames and the Vegas Golden Knights reportedly held numerous trade talks about Andersson in the offseason.</p>

<p>For some NHLers, there's more at stake in the first half of the season than simply helping their teams win games: They're auditioning for a chance to represent their country in Italy at the 2026 Olympics from Feb. 11-22.</p><p>The auditioning relates mostly to players from Canada and the United States, as the North American nations have the greatest player pools to select from.</p><p>Each participating country named six Olympians in June. Canada went with Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Connor McDavid, Brayden Point, and Sam Reinhart, while the U.S. chose Jack Eichel, Quinn Hughes, Auston Matthews, Charlie McAvoy, Brady Tkachuk, and Matthew Tkachuk.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Complete 25-man rosters are due by Dec. 31.</p><p>Which Canadian and American players have stood out - for better or worse - through the opening month? His 18 points are tied for seventh most in the NHL as of Wednesday morning. It's not just the production that should have Celebrini on Canada's short list, however. The 19-year-old's 200-foot game is mature beyond his years. Also: Celebrini's handedness - he shoots left - could help his chances, as Canada has more righties than lefties on the bubble at forward.</p><p><strong>Nick Suzuki</strong><br><br>Suzuki used a 4 Nations Face-Off roster snub as a launching pad to stardom. The Canadiens captain shares the NHL lead in points since the February event, collecting 18 goals and 38 assists for 56 points in 39 games (including 19 points in 13 contests this year). The 26-year-old is a responsible player who can be slotted at center or wing, on any line, for Canada. The only "knock" against Suzuki at this point is that he's declined offers to represent Canada at past world championships - something the Olympic brain trust might care about.</p><p><strong>Matthew Schaefer</strong></p><p>Nobody expected Schaefer to be a consideration as an 18-year-old defenseman, but his play thus far has warranted at least a serious discussion. The production (11 points in 13 games) speaks for itself, but it's Schaefer's poise and defensive chops that should have him firmly on Canada's radar.</p><p><strong>Logan Thompson</strong></p><p>Thompson's .935 save percentage is tops among Canadian goalies, and he's earned a quality start in all eight of his appearances this season. In other words, the Capitals' No. 1 goalie is making a compelling case for a roster spot. The question is, will Canada general manager Doug Armstrong finally buy in? Thompson played well last year, too, yet he didn't sniff a 4 Nations spot or receive an invite to Canada's Olympic orientation camp in August.</p><p><strong>Mark Scheifele</strong></p><p>There's no way Scheifele, whose 20 points are one off the league lead, can be denied a roster spot ... right? Offense aside, there are still valid concerns about how his lack of pace and inconsistent defensive game would factor in if he's tasked with a bottom-six role. However, his start has been worrisome: only two goals and two assists, and the Panthers have been outscored 10-3 in his five-on-five minutes. Old-fashioned bad puck luck and a Stanley Cup hangover aren't helping a guy who, in his best years, doesn't put up eye-popping regular-season totals. Bennett hasn't lost his spot 13 games in, but his grip on it will loosen if he can't rebound soon.</p><p><strong>Sam Montembeault</strong></p><p>Montembeault was the third-stringer at 4 Nations and one of three goalies invited to Canada's orientation camp, giving him an inside track for an Olympic spot entering 2025-26. What's Montembeault done? Posted an .855 SV% in seven games and lost Montreal's starting job to Jakub Dobes. Yikes.</p><p><strong>Evan Bouchard</strong></p><p>Bouchard has always been a mistake-prone player. But it was fair to wonder if this season would be different, considering the Olympic year and him having turned 26 years old. The answer through 15 games is a hard no. Bouchard has been a turnover machine, and so many of them are avoidable, terribly timed, or both. If the Oilers defenseman was putting up gaudy numbers, OK, sure, he'd have an outside chance of being Canada's eighth blue-liner. But 10 points isn't special enough to rid the baggage Bouchard carries around.</p><p><strong>Robert Thomas</strong></p><p>Thomas might have made Canada's 4 Nations roster if he didn't get injured to start last season. He's quick, smart, and versatile - the kind of player Canada coach Jon Cooper would love at his disposal. Thomas needed a strong first month to re-enter the Olympic conversation but, again, got hurt. GM Bill Guerin must now prioritize skill and finishing. Thompson leads all NHLers with 37 five-on-five goals since the start of last season. The 6-foot-7 Sabres sniper impressed at the 2025 Worlds and is off to a solid start with five goals and five assists in 13 regular-season games.</p><p><strong>Cole Caufield</strong></p><p>Caufield's lack of size and potential inability to adapt to a bottom-six role will surely give USA's management pause. Yet his game-breaking ability may be too difficult to ignore if he keeps up this pace. Caufield is tied for the NHL lead in goals with 10 in 13 games.</p><p><strong>Jackson LaCombe</strong></p><p>LaCombe hasn't become a household name yet, but the rising star signed the richest contract in Ducks franchise history in October for a reason. He's an excellent skater with plus puck skills who's also very good at disrupting attacks and retrieving loose pucks. While the U.S. has a dozen good options to fill out its defense corps, LaCombe's certainly in the mix.</p><p><strong>Shane Pinto</strong></p><p>You can bet coach Mike Sullivan will vouch for a right-handed center whom he can trust to take key defensive-zone faceoffs, not unlike how Vincent Trocheck was used at 4 Nations. With Trocheck injured and getting up there in age, Pinto could be a stellar replacement. The 6-foot-3 pivot is sound defensively, has won 60.4% of his draws, and - bonus - has racked up eight goals in 13 games.</p><p><strong>Adam Fox</strong></p><p>Fox, the 2021 Norris Trophy winner, looked out of sorts for the vast majority of 2024-25. He struggled for the Rangers, in part because of injury, and slid down USA's depth chart at 4 Nations as the event's fast, physical play exposed his slow boots and small stature. Nelson has a reputation as a big-game player, but he was mostly a nonfactor at 4 Nations and is now 34 years old. There are simply better center options for the U.S.</p><p><strong>Patrick Kane</strong></p><p>Kane, who turns 37 in November, isn't who he used to be and was thus an Olympic long shot coming into the season. Yet, if you squinted hard enough, you could envision "Showtime" in an American jersey, assuming the role of power-play specialist and off-ice leader. That idea is currently dead, with Kane appearing in just five of the Red Wings' first 14 games, thanks to an injury.</p><p><strong>Luke Hughes</strong></p><p>Hughes missed most of training camp due to a contract stalemate, possibly contributing to the slow start that he needed to avoid to have any chance of making the team. He's yet to score and has been sloppy defensively at times. In what would be a depth role, the Americans would likely prefer a safer option over Hughes.</p><p><strong>Jeremy Swayman</strong></p><p>Swayman hasn't played poorly this year. The Bruins netminder hasn't dominated, either, and there are only three U.S. goalie spots. Connor Hellebuyck is a lock for one, and Jake Oettinger's a good bet for another. Meanwhile, Thatcher Demko is enjoying arguably the best season among all American goalies.</p>

In order to award a goal in this situation, the goal post must have been displaced by the actions of a defending player, the attacking player must have an imminent scoring opportunity prior to the goal post being displaced, and it must be determined that the puck would have entered the net between the normal position of the goal posts."</p><p>Predators head coach Andrew Brunette disagreed with the ruling.</p><p>"The explanation was, in (the referee's) opinion, it was a goal," Brunette told reporters postgame. "I disagree with his opinion, but that's the way it is… Just by the physics of pushing, I don't think (Annunen was trying to knock the net off). I thought they'd miss the net. If the net didn't dislodge, it wouldn't have ended up being in the net. Unfortunately, they didn't see it the same way and you move on."</p><p>Forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1152" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1152">Steven Stamkos</a> shared his coach's opinion.</p><p>"I don't think there was any intent from our goaltender to knock it off - it came off twice today," Stamkos said. "From our vantage point - obviously going to differ from theirs - but we thought the puck came back to him on the second attempt because the net was off. If not, the puck goes behind the net, and we live to fight another day. "I got to be more hard on pucks in scoring areas. There's moments in the game where we can turn the tide with a chance or a goal and I'm not doing it. I need to be better. I need to lead better for these guys."</p><p>Miller has managed three goals and five assists in 14 games this season. All of his goals and three of his assists have come on the road, where the Rangers are an impressive 6-1-1.</p><p>An abysmal power play has played a major role in New York's offensive woes. The Rangers are last in the league with the man advantage, converting on just four of 36 opportunities. </p>

<p>The Winnipeg Jets will welcome captain <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/2147" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/2147">Adam Lowry</a> back to the ice Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings, and they're also hoping to ensure he'll be in the lineup for years to come.</p><p>The Jets and Lowry are "super motivated" to get a contract extension over the finish line, <a href="https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/2025/11/04/insider-trading-ten-game-milestone-looms-for-nhl-rookies/">TSN's Darren Dreger</a> reports. It's been a priority for a while for Winnipeg to get Lowry signed to a "longer-term" deal, Dreger adds.</p><p>Lowry is in the final season of a five-year, $16.25-million contract signed back in 2021. The Jets drafted Lowry in the third round in 2011 and he's spent his entire career in Winnipeg. <p>In any other year, the Toronto Maple Leafs would be taking a lot of heat right now. Fortunately for them, the Blue Jays' World Series run has largely made the Maple Leafs an afterthought in Ontario's capital this October.</p><p>The Maple Leafs enter Thursday 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 5-5-1 record. The reigning Atlantic Division champions have three wins in regulation and none on the road. Their goal differential sits at minus-4. All this while playing just two games against teams that made the playoffs a year ago.</p><p>And yet, history shows us that the slow start should be no reason to hit the panic button. The Maple Leafs, who own the NHL's longest active playoff streak at nine seasons, typically rebound from sluggish Octobers with scorching Novembers.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><figure class="article-segment--table"><div class="table-responsive"><table>

</table></div></figure><p>Can they do it again this year? There's reason to believe that a drastic turnaround once the calendar flips to November is less of a guarantee than it has been in the past. That's in part due to the gaping hole on the team's top line. For all the flak Mitch Marner received for his playoff performances, there's no denying he was integral to Toronto's regular-season success.</p><p>Without Marner, the Maple Leafs continue to search for someone to flank first-line center Auston Matthews - who has yet to really take off with just five goals and three assists in 11 games. The combination of the Maple Leafs captain between Matthew Knies and Max Domi that jelled during Matthews' 69-goal season in 2023-24 hasn't worked. Newcomer Matias Maccelli alongside Matthews and Knies didn't last long. The underlying numbers with Matthews, Knies, and rookie Easton Cowan were strong, but the production wasn't there.</p><p>Bobby McMann and William Nylander have most recently featured on Matthews' line, but it's fair to wonder if McMann has the playmaking chops to get the most out of the three-time Maurice "Rocket" Richard winner. While Nylander and Matthews have chemistry, in a perfect world, Toronto's two best forwards anchor their own lines.</p><p>It feels inevitable that the Maple Leafs will attempt to add a top-six winger at some point before the deadline, but with only three picks in the 2026 draft and no first-rounder until 2028, it won't be easy. Other than Cowan and 2024 first-round pick Ben Danford, Toronto's prospect pool is lacking.</p><p>Regardless, one forward won't fix all of Toronto's problems. This is still a team that's been largely outplayed most nights dating back to the start of last season when Marner was still in the fold.</p><p>The Maple Leafs rank 15th in shot differential and 19th in expected goals share at five-on-five this season. Anthony Stolarz, who's started eight of the team's 11 games with Joseph Woll unavailable to begin the year, hasn't been particularly sharp. He owns an .886 save percentage after leading the league with a .926 mark last season. He's saved 0.87 goals above expected after finishing second in the NHL with 31.2 GSAx a year ago.</p><p>Toronto's underlying numbers were below average in its first season under head coach Craig Berube in 2024-25, but much of that was hidden thanks to great goaltending and an opportunistic offense. The Maple Leafs finished 19th in xGF%, 20th in xGF/60, and 16th in xGA/60 at five-on-five last season.</p><p>More sustained offensive pressure and, in turn, less time defending could lead to better results from Stolarz. Increased O-zone time could be achieved if the Maple Leafs find the right mix up front, but that seems like a big "if" given the results under Berube since the start of last season.</p><p>If everything does come together, the Maple Leafs could take off and, as usual, re-establish themselves as a top-10 team in the league. <p>Chicago Blackhawks phenom <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/13829" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/13829">Connor Bedard</a> put forth arguably the best performance of his NHL career Tuesday, scoring his first hat trick and adding an assist in a 7-3 drubbing of the Ottawa Senators. </p><p>If he's lucky, the decision-makers for Canada's Olympic team took notice.</p><p>"If that's something that I get to do, that would be unbelievable, and I would do anything to be on that team," Bedard told reporters postgame when asked if he was thinking about the Olympics. "But I'm just trying to take things day by day and have fun playing in the NHL and trying to grow as a team and win hockey games and do everything I can to play my best hockey. In the end, that'll be what puts me in a spot to make it."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Bedard was one of 26 forwards invited to Canada's Olympic orientation camp in the summer. With five forwards already named to the team in June, and several others on the inside track due to strong showings at the 4 Nations Face-Off, Bedard knows making the roster won't be easy.</p><p>"I mean, it's Canada, there's so many amazing players, you never know," the 20-year-old said. "I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing. I'm focused on the Hawks. That stuff kind of comes later down the line."</p><p>The 2023 No. 1 pick appears to be making the kind of leap that could earn him serious consideration for the roster. He's up to six goals and six assists in 10 games this season with a plus-4 rating.</p><p>Bedard's skating has also improved enough that the pace of Olympic hockey wouldn't be an issue. His max speed of 22.36 mph ranks in the 79th percentile among NHL players this season, up from 21.44 mph last season, which ranked below the 50th percentile.</p><p>His two-way game remains a work in progress, however. Chicago owns a 36.9% share of the expected goals with Bedard on the ice at five-on-five, per <a href="https://evolving-hockey.com/">Evolving-Hockey</a>. He also owns a negative defensive goals above replacement at minus-0.8.</p>

Miller</a> is embracing the extra meaning of his first game back in Vancouver since the Canucks traded him last season.</p><p>"It's going to be emotional for me, no doubt," Miller told reporters ahead of Tuesday's clash at Rogers Arena, according to the <a href="https://x.com/MollieeWalkerr/status/1983251470452699509">New York Post's Mollie Walker</a>. "Just trying to worry about our task at hand for the Rangers. I know that emotion is going to be there. Just going to try to use it to the best of my ability."</p><p>The Canucks traded Miller to the Rangers in January following a highly publicized rift with teammate <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/7699" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/7699">Elias Pettersson</a>. The Canucks reportedly shopped both players, but opted to keep the younger Pettersson. Vancouver landed forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/6526" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/6526">Filip Chytil</a>, blue-liner <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/15219" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/15219">Victor Mancini</a>, and a first-round pick (which it flipped to acquire defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/4553" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/4553">Marcus Pettersson</a>) in exchange for Miller.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Miller said he doesn't carry any regrets or grudges about the way his tenure ended in Vancouver.</p><p>"Everything happens. You can't go back and change anything," he said. "Obviously it's ugly sometimes at the end, but I think for the majority of the time I was here, it's been all positive, it's been a lot of good things. I'm not going to sit here and dwell over the way it ended. I didn't expect that to be pretty."</p><p>His time with the Canucks was highly successful before things turned sour. Miller tallied 437 points in 404 games across six seasons with the club, adding nine goals and 21 assists in 30 playoff appearances.</p><p>However, Miller admitted he's unsure what kind of reception he'll get from Canucks fans.</p><p>"I never said a bad thing about Vancouver when I left," Miller said. "I loved it here. It was like home away from home. The way they treated myself and my family is something we'll always cherish."</p>

"He's certainly shown signs of it. The consistency, it's kind of, you know, he disappears a little bit sometimes. You gotta have everybody contributing, otherwise it's not gonna work."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Svechnikov has failed to register a point in eight games entering Tuesday's tilt with the Vegas Golden Knights. He's averaging 14:43 per contest, which would be his lowest mark since he was an 18-year-old rookie.</p><p>The 25-year-old has managed 15 total shots and five hits this season. He averaged 223 shots and 167 hits per 82 games in his career entering 2025-26.</p><p>Svechnikov set career highs with 30 goals and 39 assists in 2021-22. He tallied 20 goals and 28 assists last season before adding 12 points in 15 playoff appearances.</p><p>He says he isn't overly concerned with his early-season slump.</p><p>"If you go negative, then it's going to get worse and worse. So I try to stay positive. It's fine," Svechnikov said Monday. "Maybe for some it's a bigger deal, but for me, it's not that big of a deal. I've been there - maybe not in the start of the year, but I've been there many times, so it's fine, totally fine. I could have scored last game. I didn't.</p><p>"I've just got to find my game, that's all. I don't worry about the points or goals."</p><p>The Hurricanes drafted Svechnikov second overall in 2018. He's in the fifth season of a eight-year contract carrying an average annual value of $7.75 million.</p>

Still, the Jaguars not completely shutting down the idea comes as a surprise, considering the 23-year-old finished fourth in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2024.</p><p>Thomas caught 87 passes for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, earning a Pro Bowl nod. While his sophomore campaign has been slightly underwhelming relative to the lofty standards he established as a rookie, Thomas still paces Jacksonville with 365 receiving yards in seven games.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>He's under contract for at least two more seasons - three if the team decides to pick up his fifth-year option. The Jaguars drafted Thomas 23rd overall in 2024, although that was under the organization's previous regime. Jacksonville hired Liam Coen as head coach in January and James Gladstone as general manager in February.</p><p>The Jaguars, who rank 16th in the NFL in points against, are also shopping for players on defense, Russini adds. They enter Sunday holding the third and final wild-card spot in the AFC with a 4-3 record.</p><p>Jacksonville owns 12 picks in the 2026 draft, but it's without a first-rounder after trading up to select two-way star <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/209912" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/209912">Travis Hunter</a> in 2025.</p>
