<p>The 2025 NHL trade deadline is fast approaching, and nothing is more fun than arguing over hypothetical trades this time of year.</p><p>Here's how this exercise went down: Each of theScore's NHL news editors (Kyle Cushman, Kayla Douglas, Josh Gold-Smith, Sean O'Leary, and Josh Wegman) submitted a trade for the other four to decide which team would say "no" to the scenario. During Bowman's tenure in Chicago, he traded for Jones and signed him to an eight-year, $76-million extension. Edmonton's biggest hole is a second-pair defender for the right side. Jones would give the Oilers a formidable top four along with Mattias Ekholm, Evan Bouchard, and Darnell Nurse.</p><p>Jones, 30, will likely be past his prime by the time the Blackhawks are competitive again. Trading him now, while he's in the midst of a good year, could be a wise move in case his play craters in a couple of years and he becomes untradable because of the big contract. Savoie, the No. 9 pick by Buffalo in 2022, is Edmonton's top prospect. While Savoie carries plenty of upside, there's no guarantee he becomes an NHL star because of his 5-foot-9, 180-pound frame. His numbers in the AHL this season are good, but not great.</p><p>Chicago might also be hesitant to retain $1.5 million annually on Jones' contract, considering he's on the books for five additional years. If the Canucks, who are hanging on to the last wild-card spot in the Western Conference, can't agree to an extension with the sniper, they could opt to move him or risk losing him for nothing. The Canucks are also reportedly looking to move Soucy, who has an additional year of term.</p><p>The Wild have long been tied to Boeser, a Minnesota native. The dead-cap hit from the Zach Parise/Ryan Suter buyouts drops from $14.7 million this season to $1.66 million next season. Combine that with the rising salary cap, and the Wild have money to spend. Miller and Bo Horvat in recent years. Dealing away another offensive star would be a gut punch, and leave Elias Pettersson looking something like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33NlssWUbBU&amp;ab_channel=RodrigodeDeus">Will Smith at the end of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"</a> among the team's forwards.</p><p>Ohgren was a first-round pick in 2022, but he's managed just two goals and four assists in 23 career games. The draft pick could end up being pretty late in what's considered a weaker class. If the Canucks are going to trade away a key piece of their core such as Boeser, they'll likely want a sure thing coming back. They enjoyed career years in 2022-23 - Cozens with 68 points and Zegras with 65. But both could use a change of scenery amid second consecutive down years. Part of it is he's in the second season of a seven-year contract with a $7.1-million cap hit that might seem steep now, but it could age gracefully over time. Zegras will be a restricted free agent in 2026.</p><p>Cozens also projects as a higher-floor player. Even if he never recaptures his offensive form from two years ago, he profiles as a strong defender. That hasn't necessarily come to fruition lately, but as a good skater who's 6-foot-3, he has the physical tools to be a matchup, shutdown center.</p><p>Zegras' floor is significantly lower considering he might not even be a center. The Ducks have used him a lot on the wing in recent years because of his poor defensive abilities. </table></div></figure><p><strong>Why it could work: </strong>The Kings are likely headed to the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, but their offense leaves much to be desired. If they're to get past Round 1 for the first time since winning the Stanley Cup in 2014, the offense must be improved.</p><p>With 25 goals and 23 assists in 56 games, Rakell would provide a clear upgrade offensively over Moore, who's managed only eight goals and 15 assists through 44 appearances. Both players are signed until 2028: Rakell at $5 million annually, Moore at $4.2 million.</p><p>The Penguins, meanwhile, would be happy to continue stockpiling more picks and prospects while getting an immediate replacement for Rakell - one general manager Kyle Dubas is familiar with. After all, it was only a year ago that Moore had more than double the amount of goals as Rakell (31-15). They might be hesitant to sell low. Moore, a native of Thousand Oaks, California, is a local product, too, so there's some sentimental attachment.</p><p>For Pittsburgh, it has no reason to force a trade for Rakell it doesn't absolutely love considering the term on his contract. It's possible the Pens believe they could get a better offer in the summer with the cap going up and a bigger market of teams interested.</p><h3>Avalanche make another hockey deal</h3><p><strong>Utah receives:</strong> Casey Mittelstadt<br><strong>Avalanche receive:</strong> Barrett Hayton</p><p><em>Submitted by: Cushman</em></p><figure class="article-segment--table"><div class="table-responsive"><table>

</table></div></figure><p><strong>Why it could work: </strong>Colorado acquired Mittelstadt from Buffalo in exchange for Bowen Byram at last year's deadline, but the marriage hasn't been perfect. Mittelstadt is having a decent year with 32 points in 57 games, but his east-west game sometimes clashes with the Avalanche's north-south style. That's reportedly made the 26-year-old available, even though he has two more years left on his contract at $5.75 million annually.</p><p>If the Avs are going to trade him, it has to be another pure hockey trade to help them remain competitive. Enter Hayton. He's tallied 29 points in 56 games this season, but he's also two years younger than Mittselstadt and cheaper at $2.65 million annually through next season. He can't be a UFA until 2027.</p><p>Utah GM Bill Armstrong has openly talked about making a splash. His career has been rather inconsistent after being selected fifth overall in 2018, topping out at 43 points in 2022-23. Is he the type of player Colorado wants to hitch its wagon to as a second-line center behind Nathan MacKinnon? Centers are in high demand around the league. If the Avalanche trade Mittelstadt, they better be sure to hit on the return.</p><p>On the flip side, it's possible Utah would be unwilling to part with a homegrown player such as Hayton, who's solid defensive play and penalty-killing ability provide different elements than fellow center Logan Cooley. Like Cooley, Mittelstadt is a playmaking center without much defensive bite. That might be too much duplication for Utah's liking.</p>

Sometimes when you shoot your mouth off in the media, it bites you," Marchand told reporters postgame, including <a href="https://x.com/yaboiTCfresh/status/1892813162874847558">WEEI's Tom Carroll</a>. "You can do that during the season, but when you're playing best-on-best, it's different."</p><p>Matthew declared "it's our time now" following Team USA's 3-1 victory over Canada in the round-robin portion of the tournament. He also shared that the three fights in the opening 10 seconds of the game were planned in Team USA's group chat.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"That's called me, Brady, and (J.T. Miller) in a group chat during the day," Matthew said.</p><p>Marchand indicated that certain comments gave Team Canada bulletin-board material.</p><p>"They got a little bit ahead of themselves," Marchand continued. "But they're great players. There's not many guys in the league that do what they do, and they're extremely effective. But when you start giving teams ammo, it can work against you."</p><p>Marchand also clarified earlier comments in which he said this version of Team USA is "by far" the best he's seen.</p><p>"I said it's the best team that we've ever played against. I didn't say the best team ever," Marchand said.</p><p>Marchand recorded one goal in the tournament. The 4 Nations Face-Off victory is the latest in a long line of hardware for the pesky forward, who's also won a World Cup, a World Championship, two World Junior Championships, and a Stanley Cup.</p>

<p>Team Canada is still on top.</p><p>Canada defeated the United States 3-2 in the final of the 4 Nations Face-Off on Thursday with an <a href="https://x.com/Sportsnet/status/1892793700515799183">overtime winner</a> from <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/4560" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/4560">Connor McDavid</a> at the 8:18 mark of the extra frame.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3002" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3002">Nathan MacKinnon</a> was named tournament MVP. He made <a href="https://x.com/NHL/status/1892792427523592646">multiple 10-bell stops</a> in overtime, first robbing <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/5586" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/5586">Auston Matthews</a> with the blocker and then flashing the leather on <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/7845" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/7845">Brady Tkachuk</a>.</p><p>"Binner's a winner. That's ultimately what it is," McDavid said postgame. "He's won a big game in this building before in (Game 7 of the 2019 Stanley Cup Final). He's played in big moments. The moment doesn't get to him. </p><p>"He made probably three or four all-world saves early in overtime to allow us to score the goal. All the credit to him. Got to go do it again next February (at the Olympics)."</p><p>The United States hasn't won a best-on-best tournament since the 1996 World Cup.</p><p>Team USA fell behind to start the game but fought back and eventually led the contest.</p><p>Tkachuk notched the equalizer for the United States with just 3:08 left in the opening stanza. He managed to get a stick on Matthews' centering pass despite being swarmed by three Canadians.</p><p>The Ottawa Senators' contingent on the American side stayed hot, as defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/9188" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/9188">Jake Sanderson</a> banged home a rebound during a scramble in front of the Canadian net to put the United States ahead 7:32 into the second.</p><p>However, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3949" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3949">Sam Bennett</a> beat <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3997" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3997">Connor Hellebuyck</a> upstairs off the rush on a sweet feed from Marner to tie the game at the 14-minute mark of the second period. </p><p>Both goaltenders held strong in a fast-paced third period, sending the game to overtime to set up McDavid's magical moment.</p>

A dynamic, puck-moving defenseman such as Makar who's equally dangerous at skating his way out of trouble or snapping a breakout pass to one of Canada's high-flying forwards. In a game with such high stakes, you can bet he'll log more than 25 minutes.</p><p>His presence slots every blue-liner more appropriately down the lineup. Devon Toews gets familiarity with his longtime partner back. Josh Morrissey and Colton Parayko can operate as the second pair again. Travis Sanheim moves back to his natural, left side on the third pair with Drew Doughty.</p><p>Canada's attack runs through Makar. He's someone the U.S. has to specifically game-plan for. His aggressive puck handling has helped tremendously on Canada's breakouts. He's made some timely saves, too. But he's also allowed at least one soft goal every game. Adrian Kempe handcuffed him with a wrister against Sweden, Guentzel snuck one five-hole that proved to be the difference against the U.S., and Esa Lindell beat him from a sharp angle to spark Finland's near-epic comeback.</p><p>Goaltending is one of the most volatile positions in sports. Any netminder at this level is capable of outplaying any counterpart when it comes down to one game. Binnington's last winner-take-all game also came at Boston's TD Garden when he stopped 32 of 33 shots in Game 7 of the 2019 Stanley Cup Final, leading the St. Louis Blues past the Bruins.</p><p>With Hellebuyck in the opposing crease, Binnington will have to be nearly perfect. In a game that projects to be decided by inches, one soft goal allowed by Binnington will likely be the difference between being Canada's hero or scapegoat. "Obviously been really hard to watch. (I) want to play, but from what I can understand, the rules are the rules."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>U.S. defenseman<a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/5599" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/5599"> Charlie McAvoy</a> will miss Thursday's championship game against Canada - and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3220898" href="https://thescore.com/news/3220898">reportedly</a> considered week-to-week. Those guys also deserve to play," Hughes said. "But in saying that, it's obviously been hard for me. But there's no denying that Canada has more star power. McDavid and MacKinnon are the top two players in the world, and Crosby is one of the best ever, still playing at a high level at 37 years old. Crosby's three-assist outing in the opener showed he still has the ability to raise his game when the stakes are highest, too.</p><p>Pure talent aside, Canada's forward group has an edge in the leadership department. Eight of the 13 have won Stanley Cups, and four are captains of their NHL teams. But with the Vancouver Canucks captain out of the equation with an injury, it becomes much more debatable.</p><p>Makar is the undisputed best defenseman between the two sides. Werenski is probably No. 2 based on play this season, but Morrissey isn't far behind. The Americans may have a little more depth, especially after Canada lost Shea Theodore for the tournament. There's a case to be made that USA's second and third pairings are better than Canada's. However, Canada is more experienced with wily veterans like Doughty and Parayko. </p><p>It's a razor-thin margin, but having someone like Makar who can take over the entire game ultimately gives Canada a slight edge. It's clearly the biggest discrepancy between the two nations - an advantage that could prove to be the difference in Saturday's game, and the tournament.</p><p>Hellebuyck is the consensus best goaltender in the world right now, and he settled in brilliantly after allowing an early softie in the USA's win over Finland on Thursday. Canada's best netminders statistically this season - Logan Thompson, Mackenzie Blackwood, and Darcy Kuemper - were all left at home. Heck, Swayman may not even see the ice for the Americans in this tournament and he'd be Canada's obvious starter.</p><p>Binnington, Hill, and Montembeault have all had up-and-down seasons. Canada only needs one of them to make the routine saves, but in such a short tournament, it's difficult to know which - if any - can be trusted. Cooper guided the Tampa Bay Lightning to two Stanley Cups, two more finals appearances, and a .638 points percentage across 13 seasons. Sullivan owns a .594 points percentage in his 12 campaigns as an NHL head coach and led the Pittsburgh Penguins to two Stanley Cups.</p><p>Neither boasts an overly impressive international resume, though Sullivan's is longer. He's been an assistant coach for the USA on four occasions: the 2006 Olympics, the 2007 and 2008 World Championships, and the 2016 World Cup. None of those teams found success, though. Cooper was an assistant for Team North America at the 2016 World Cup and also led Canada to silver at the 2017 Worlds.</p><p>Both nations have an impressive stable of assistant coaches. Canada brought along Bruce Cassidy, Peter DeBoer, and Rick Tocchet. The United States tapped John Tortorella, John Hynes, and David Quinn.</p><p>Cooper and Sullivan have already shown their ability to adjust on the fly. Canada navigated a difficult spot with only five defensemen in its opener. <p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1637" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1637">Tiger Woods</a> has withdrawn from this week's Genesis Invitational, he <a href="https://x.com/TigerWoods/status/1889011457381240927">announced</a> Monday.</p><p>"I planned to tee it up this week, but I'm just not ready," he wrote in a statement. "I did my best to prepare, knowing it's what my mom would have wanted, but I'm still processing her loss.</p><p>"Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my mom's passing."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Woods' mother, Kultida, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3209464" href="https://thescore.com/news/3209464">died Feb. 4</a>.</p><p>The Genesis, which Woods hosts, was moved from its usual Riviera Country Club location to San Diego's Torrey Pines in January because of the Los Angeles wildfires. It was set to be his 2025 PGA TOUR season debut - his first event since undergoing back surgery in September of last year.</p><p>Woods hasn't played a PGA TOUR event since 2024 Open Championship in July. He played in just five tournaments last season, making his only cut at the Masters.</p>

<p>Team Canada captain <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1002" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1002">Sidney Crosby</a> will play in Wednesday's 4 Nations Face-Off opener against Sweden, he told reporters Monday, including <a href="https://x.com/reporterchris/status/1889001637248750029">TSN's Chris Johnston</a>.</p><p>Crosby's status was in question after he missed the Pittsburgh Penguins' last two games before the break with an upper-body injury. The decision to play in the tournament was left up to him.</p><p>Canada had until 2 p.m. ET on Monday to name a replacement or not. <p>The 4 Nations Face-Off rosters were always going to include some eyebrow-raising choices when they were announced more than two months ago. But what if teams were instead able to select their squads in the week leading up to the tournament? How different would the rosters look?</p><p>Sweden and Finland would mostly look the same. They have smaller player pools to choose from. But both nations already made several injury-related changes, and Sweden, notably, was able to rectify its most egregious snub by adding Rickard Rakell to the roster.</p><p>Canada and the United States, meanwhile, surely want some do-overs - even if general managers Don Sweeney and Bill Guerin never admit it. He's never hit the 50-point mark in his career and isn't a defensive whiz, either. Bennett was chosen for his tenacity, competitiveness, and physicality. He elevated his game in each of the last two playoff runs and got off to a great start in the 2024-25 season. However, since being named to the team Dec. 4, Bennett has been ice cold with just five goals and six assists in 30 games.<strong> </strong>It's clear there are at least three players who are more deserving.</p><p>Enter Zach Hyman, who, in the offseason, was seemingly a lock to flank Connor McDavid on Canada's top line due to their chemistry with the Edmonton Oilers. But even after scoring a combined 70 goals in the 2023-24 regular season and playoffs, Hyman was left off the team after a slow start to the new season. He's picked it up, though, with 16 goals in 30 games since the roster announcement. Hyman doesn't play with the same physical edge as Bennett, but he's a grinder who fits on any line thanks to his forechecking and puck-hounding ability.</p><p>Mark Scheifele, meanwhile, was always going to be an awkward fit for a bottom-six role on Canada since he doesn't play with a ton of pace and isn't strong defensively. But 31 goals - tied for the most among all Canadian skaters -<strong> </strong>and 32 assists in 56 games is tough to ignore.</p><p>If Canada's brass insisted on a tone-setter for the bottom six, Tom Wilson would've been a better pick than Bennett. Logan Thompson was outplaying Sam Montembeault at the time the roster was announced and boasts a longer track record of success.</p><p>Now months removed from the decision, the pick looks even worse.</p><p>Montembeault isn't even the best goalie on the Montreal Canadiens following the emergence of Jakub Dobes, and he's posted a mediocre .896 save percentage in 41 games this season. He has, however, stopped an impressive 11.33 goals above expected.</p><p>Thompson, meanwhile, would likely be the favorite to start for Canada had he been named to the team. The power forward has tallied<strong> </strong>only four assists this season, and his underlying numbers are dreadful. He'll provide veteran leadership for the United States, but there are three players who are far more deserving of the roster spot.</p><p>Clayton Keller is an undersized playmaker with a completely different style of game, but he's been excellent this season with 59 points in 54 games as Utah's captain. His 5-foot-10, 178-pound frame likely played a part in keeping him off Team USA.</p><p>The same can't be said for the 6-foot-3, 202-pound Jason Robertson. Offseason foot surgery contributed to his slow start to the year, but he's rebounding nicely with 37 points in 31 games since the roster announcement.</p><p>Tage Thompson was arguably the most egregious omission. The towering Buffalo Sabres forward has tallied 26 goals and 22 assists in 48 games this season.</p><p>Omitting this type of game-breaking offensive talent has backfired for USA in past best-on-best competitions, most notably during the nation's winless showing at the 2016 World Cup. Remember Justin Abdelkader over Phil Kessel? Experience appears to be the only thing Hanifin has a leg up on.</p><p>Sanderson has been better in virtually ever facet of the game. He boasts 35 points and 5.3 defensive goals above replacement, while Hanifin has 23 points and minus-3.3 defensive goals above replacement. <p>The bright lights didn't faze <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/4114" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/4114">Adrian Meronk</a>.</p><p>"The Polish Prince" won the LIV Golf season opener Saturday by two strokes over <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1111" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1111">Jon Rahm</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/3148" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/3148">Sebastian Munoz</a> under the lights at Riyadh Golf Club in Saudi Arabia. </p><p>Meronk finished the tournament at 17-under par with rounds of 62, 66, and 71. He nearly fumbled away a four-stroke lead with back-to-back bogeys on holes 10 and 11 but was able to hold on for the win.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"It was a fight at the end, but super happy that I crossed the line," he <a href="https://x.com/LIVRandONIONS/status/1888317972864811013">said</a>. "Very satisfying to win the tournament."</p><p>Rahm's Legion XIII won the team portion of the tournament by 11 strokes over Ripper GC. Meronk's Cleeks GC finished sixth out of 13 squads.</p><p>It's the first individual LIV Golf win for Meronk. He's also the first Cleeks GC player to secure a victory.</p>
