Kylie Masse takes bronze in 200m backstroke

Canadian backstroke specialist Kylie Masse won bronze in the 200m Friday for the fifth medal of her Olympic career.

Masse previously won two silvers and a bronze at 2020 Tokyo and a bronze at 2016 Rio.

Australia's Kaylee McKeown took gold in the 200m final, while Regan Smith of the United States claimed silver.

Masse sprinted to an early lead Friday before she began fading in the second and third lengths of the pool. She and Phoebe Bacon were neck-and-neck for third place down the stretch, but Masse managed to touch the wall 0.04 seconds ahead of the American to snatch the final spot on the podium.

Four of Masse's five Olympic medals have come in the backstroke, with the other one from a relay medley.

McKeown claimed gold in the 100m and 200m backstroke events in Paris, breaking Olympic records in both finals.
