The Boston Bruins placed rookie forward James Hagens on injured reserve with an undisclosed ailment, the team announced Saturday.

"It's definitely gonna be a few weeks," Bruins head coach Marco Sturm said Saturday. "Very unfortunate. It's not a dirty play or anything like that. Just got him at the wrong spot there, and so he just needs some time to heal."

Hagens left Thursday's win against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third period and didn't return after a cross-check from defenseman Samuel Girard.

Hagens is tied for the NHL rookie scoring lead with 12 points in 17 games. The 20-year-old is third in rookie goals with six.

Boston drafted Hagens seventh overall in 2025. Hagens made his NHL debut at the end of last season, playing two regular-season contests before getting into three playoff games.

The Bruins subsequently recalled forward Mikey Eyssimont from the AHL. The 30-year-old has 13 goals and 16 points in eight games with the Providence Bruins.

Boston is 12-4-1 and leads the Atlantic Division with 25 points.
