The Detroit Red Wings tabbed Shawn Horcoff as interim general manager, the team announced Tuesday.
Horcoff served as Detroit's assistant GM under Steve Yzerman.
The Red Wings will continue to search for a full-time GM to replace Yzerman, who stepped down from that role in July. He's now transitioning to a new position as senior adviser to the team governor and CEO.
Horcoff remains a candidate for the full-time GM role.
"His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline," Red Wings CEO Chris Ilitch said in a statement. "Shawn has my complete support and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization.
"Our search has attracted significant interest in the head of hockey operations position from respected leaders across the industry, and several of those candidates, including Shawn, remain under consideration for the permanent role. Identifying and hiring the right leader is essential to our franchise's future, and we remain committed to being deliberate and thorough in this process."
Horcoff has worked in the Red Wings' front office since 2016-17. He played 15 seasons in the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, and Anaheim Ducks from 2000-16.
Horcoff should be busy right away in his new position. His most pressing task is completing a new deal for stalwart defenseman Simon Edvinsson, a restricted free agent. Horcoff also has to decide what to do with No. 1 center Dylan Larkin, who requested a trade in June and was stripped of the captaincy Friday.
