The Edmonton Oilers signed forward Alex Formenton to a one-year contract worth $850,000, the team announced Wednesday.
Formenton, who last played in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators in 2022, was one of five Hockey Canada players acquitted of sexual assault charges in 2025. The NHL lifted its suspension of Formenton, along with Carter Hart, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, and Michael McLeod, on Dec. 1, 2025.
Hart was the only one of the five to play in the NHL last season, doing so with the Vegas Golden Knights. Dube signed with the St. Louis Blues on July 1. Foote and McLeod remain without NHL contracts.
Hockey Canada reinstated Formenton in August, while the other four players remain suspended by the organization with staggered reinstatement dates over the next four years.
Last season, Formenton played for HC Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland, where he produced 13 goals and 23 points in 42 games. The 26-year-old also played for the team from 2022-24 after leaving the NHL.
Formenton tallied 18 goals and 32 points in 79 contests with the Senators in 2021-22, his only full season in the NHL. His head coach at the time was D.J. Smith, who's now an associate coach on Mike Babcock's staff in Edmonton.
Ottawa drafted Formenton in the second round in 2017. He has 23 goals and 39 points in 109 career games over parts of four campaigns.
