The Montreal Canadiens eliminated the Tampa Bay Lightning from the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 2-1 win in Sunday's Game 7.
Alex Newhook netted the series-deciding goal with 8:53 remaining in the third period.
The Canadiens will face the Buffalo Sabres in the second round. Game 1 is Wednesday. The Sabres eliminated the Boston Bruins in six games Thursday.
Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki opened the scoring in the first period with his first goal of the postseason. Dominic James netted Tampa Bay's lone goal on the power play in the second.
Despite the loss, Tampa held Montreal to only nine shots on goal. It's the fewest shots in a win in Stanley Cup Playoffs history. The Canadiens didn't register a shot on goal in the second period.
Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes made 28 saves. He's the fifth rookie goaltender to win a Game 7 in Montreal's history, joining Jacques Plante, Ken Dryden, Patrick Roy, and Carey Price.
"I couldn't believe it. I still can't believe it," Dobes told Sportsnet's Kyle Bukauskas after outduelling one of his goaltending heroes in Andrei Vasilevskiy. "I don't wanna get emotional but like, I was dreaming of this since I was - I don't even know. I just, you know, was the luckier guy and beat him in a best-of-seven. Really proud of myself. I gotta stay humble, and we gotta go to Buffalo and repeat the same thing."
It's the fourth straight first-round exit for the Lightning.
"This team was different. ... They just went out there wearing their heart on their sleeve, and they gave everything they possibly could, and we just came up short," Tampa head coach Jon Cooper said, according to team reporter Gabby Shirley.
