Hurricanes get Miller on 8-year, $60M deal in sign-and-trade
The Carolina Hurricanes acquired defenseman K'Andre Miller from the New York Rangers in a sign-and-trade, the teams announced Tuesday.
Miller, who was a restricted free agent, inked an eight-year pact with a $7.5-million cap hit.
In return, the Rangers are getting a conditional first-round pick, a 2026 second-rounder, and defenseman Scott Morrow. Here's the full conditions of the first-round pick, per TSN's Chris Johnston:
Carolina has two 2026 first-round picks: CAR and DAL.
— Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) July 1, 2025
** If both outside the top-10, NYR receives better of the two.
** If one pick is in top-10 and the other is not, NYR receives lesser of the picks
** If both picks are inside the top-10, NYR receives better CAR/DAL 2027 1st
The Hurricanes considered extending Miller an offer sheet before the two sides agreed on a trade, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Miller totaled seven goals and 27 points in 74 games last season. He's played over 21 minutes in four of his five NHL campaigns, and he tied a career-high at 21:57 this past year. The 6-foot-5 defender ranked second on the Rangers with 110 blocks.
The 25-year-old accrued 36 goals and 132 points in 368 career contests over five seasons in New York. The Rangers drafted Miller 22nd overall in 2018.
The Hurricanes have $19 million in cap space following the trade. Two top-four regulars from their blue line last season - Dmitry Orlov and Brent Burns - remain unsigned. However, prized defensive prospect Alexander Nikishin is expected to become a full-time player in 2025-26 after joining the Hurricanes late last season following six years in the KHL.
New York signed defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov to a seven-year, $49-million contract Tuesday, essentially replacing Miller on the left side of its blue line. The Rangers, who also re-signed RFA winger Will Cuylle to a two-year, $7.8-million pact, are left with $1.4 million in cap space.
Morrow, a 6-foot-2, right-shot defenseman, was a second-round pick by the Hurricanes in 2021. The 22-year-old tallied 39 points in 52 AHL games this past season and has collected a goal and five assists in 16 career NHL appearances. His path to NHL playing time could be blocked in the interim with Adam Fox, Will Borgen, and Braden Schneider making up the right side of New York's blue line.
