Canucks extend Demko, Garland

The Vancouver Canucks signed goaltender Thatcher Demko and forward Conor Garland to contract extensions Tuesday.

Demko's new contract is for three years with an $8.5-million cap hit. Garland's pact is for six years at a $6 million average annual value. Each deal will kick in for the 2026-27 season as both players were scheduled to reach unrestricted free agency next summer.

Demko's current deal pays him $5 million annually. The 29-year-old was a Vezina Trophy finalist in 2024 but was severely limited by injuries this past season. Demko didn't take the ice until December due to a knee injury he sustained in last year's playoffs, then missed an additional 15 games in February due to a lower-body issue.

Over eight years with the Canucks, Demko owns a .910 save percentage across 242 appearances.

Vancouver also has goaltender Kevin Lankinen signed through 2030 at a $4.5-million cap hit.

Garland reportedly wanted a trade out of Vancouver early in the 2023-24 season, but he's since grown into one of the club's most important forwards. He averaged a career-high 18:39 per contest last season, notching 50 points.

He signed a five-year, $24.75-million contract with the Canucks in 2021 after being acquired from the Arizona Coyotes along with Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Garland, 29, has 195 points in 321 games since joining the Canucks.

Vancouver missed the playoffs in 2024-25 after winning the Pacific Division the year prior. The club promoted Adam Foote to head coach after Rick Tocchet left for the Philadelphia Flyers.
