Wild's Johansson injured after elbow from McDavid
Minnesota Wild forward Marcus Johansson sustained an upper-body injury and didn't return to Wednesday's 5-3 loss against the Edmonton Oilers after an elbow from star forward Connor McDavid.
McDavid clipped Johansson in the second period. He wasn't assessed a penalty on the play.
Wild defenseman Jake Middleton said the non-call was "horseshit," according to The Athletic's Michael Russo.
"I don't care if it's the best player in the world," Middleton added, noting that Wild forwards Ryan Hartman and Marcus Foligno wouldn't have gotten the treatment McDavid did.
Wild forward Joel Eriksson Ek didn't see the collision but was told by the referee that Johansson was struck by his own stick, according to Russo.
The NHL has suspended McDavid once in his 686-game career. He got two games for an illegal check to the head of Nick Leddy in 2019.
Johansson has five goals and 16 points in 44 games this season.
McDavid ranks fourth in the NHL with 62 points in 41 contests. He's a five-time winner of the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer and has claimed the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP three times.
The Oilers play Thursday against the Colorado Avalanche.
