The Washington Commanders and New York Giants tied 27-27 on Sunday after both teams squandered glorious chances to win in overtime.
The Commanders were in field-goal range late in the extra frame but failed to spike the ball in time due to horrendous clock management.
Washington ran its penultimate play with 55 seconds left on the clock. The team didn't run another until 12 seconds remained. Quarterback Jayden Daniels was tackled behind the line of scrimmage on a scramble to keep the clock running. The Commanders were out of timeouts and didn't get the next snap off in time. If they had, it would've been a 41-yard field-goal attempt.
"We all gotta be better situationally," Daniels said postgame. "(It) starts with me. Everybody will say the same thing, but we just gotta be better at situational football."
Daniels added: "Ultimately, you know, it's on me."
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn blamed himself for the clock mismanagement.
"After the first-down run, we were still trying to gain more for the kick," Quinn said. "The right call is honestly to go clock it early and don't put ourselves in that spot, and that's my responsibility. Nobody else's."
Quinn added, "Leaving tonight with a tie feels like a loss."
The Giants, meanwhile, were inside field-goal range on the previous drive until running back Cam Skattebo lost a fumble at the opposing 23-yard line.
The Commanders led 27-13 in the fourth quarter after Daniels' second rushing touchdown of the day, but the Jameis Winston-led Giants scored 14 unanswered points to force overtime.
It's the first tie in the NFL since September 2025 when the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys ended their Sunday Night Football bout with a score of 40-40. The last NFL tie before that was a 20-20 stalemate in December 2022 between the Commanders and Giants.
