Report: Mahomes has LCL repaired along with ACL
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes underwent successful surgery on a torn ACL in his left knee Monday, the team announced.
Mahomes will begin rehabbing immediately.
The Chiefs quarterback tore his ACL in the closing minutes of Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes vowed that he would return "stronger than ever" in a message posted on his social media Sunday night.
Mahomes also had a torn LCL repaired, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Chiefs head coach Reid had said earlier Monday that Mahomes avoided major damage to his other ligaments.
No clarity has been provided on if Mahomes is expected to be ready for the start of the 2026 season. But Reid said he assumes his star passer will have a "fairly quick recovery," according to ESPN's Nate Taylor.
Mahomes' injury was finishing blow to a disappointing Chiefs campaign. Sunday's loss sent the team to 6-8 and eliminated Kansas City from postseason contention. This marked the first time since 2014 that the franchise, which has appeared in the last three Super Bowls, would not be in the playoffs.
A three-time Super Bowl champion, Mahomes took Kansas City to the AFC Championship Game each season since he took over the starting job in 2018.
Gardner Minshew will finish out the season under center for the Chiefs.
