Report: Rams grant Stafford permission to speak with teams

The Los Angeles Rams are allowing quarterback Matthew Stafford's agent to speak with other teams, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported during an appearance on the "Rich Eisen Show."

Such discussions would allow the Rams to gauge Stafford's trade market and the parameters for a new contract, according to Pelissero, who adds the priority seems to be for Stafford to return to the team.

Stafford reportedly intends to play for the Rams next season after admitting he was unsure about his NFL future following Los Angeles' loss in the divisional round. However, the 37-year-old will likely need to restructure his current deal.

The two-time Pro Bowler revised the four-year, $160-million extension he signed in 2022 last year. Stafford has just $4 million guaranteed for the 2025 season and is outside the top 10 highest-paid QBs. L.A. currently holds $44.3 million in cap space ahead of the start of the new league year, per Over the Cap.

Stafford threw for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in his fourth campaign with the Rams, posting a 10-6 record.

The Rams acquired Stafford from the Detroit Lions in a trade that included Jared Goff in 2021. Stafford spent his first 12 seasons with the Lions after they drafted him first overall in 2009.

L.A. informed Stafford's teammate Cooper Kupp earlier this month that it intends to trade him this offseason.
