Sportsbooks hoping for Eagles-Bills Super Bowl
The final four of the NFL playoffs are set with intriguing Super Bowl storylines regardless of matchup.
The Chiefs are going for the first three-peat in NFL history. The Bills want to end their franchise's suffering with their first championship. The Eagles are hoping for revenge on back-to-back years of near misses. And the Commanders are trying to make Jayden Daniels the first rookie quarterback to start in the Super Bowl.
It's a win-win all around for the football world, sportsbooks included.
"The Lions losing to the Commanders was huge for us and sets up great scenarios for the Super Bowl," said Adrian Horton, director of North American sports trading at theScore Bet and ESPN Bet. "Detroit winning the Super Bowl was our worst outcome by far as it was backed heavily throughout the season."
Sportsbooks have a vested interest in the matchup, though. The Super Bowl handle (money wagered) can vary drastically depending on who plays in the big game. Future wagers will be settled once a team hoists the Lombardi Trophy, cashing thousands of open tickets that can affect their bottom line.
The Lions sat atop the oddsboard for most of the season, with many bettors believing this was their year. Detroit's exit sets up for an ideal Super Bowl, regardless of who wins.
"The Bills beating the Eagles would be the best outcome for our futures book," said Horton. "If Buffalo advances past the Chiefs, it would be one of our better outcomes regardless if the Bills win their first Super Bowl or not."
The odds for Buffalo to beat Philadelphia are +425 (19% implied probability), and the Bills are +110 to get past the Chiefs.
While Buffalo beating Kansas City may be ideal for their futures book, it could lead to less action on the Super Bowl.
"The Chiefs are a polarizing team," Horton said. "Many bettors follow their hearts and are passionate about either betting for or against Patrick Mahomes. It's hard to say if having Mahomes in the Super Bowl this year will increase handle, but it certainly can't hurt."
Since Monday morning, 41.8% of the bets have been placed on the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl at ESPN Bet, a sign bettors are keen to see Mahomes and Co. go for three straight. They've also received 33.4% of the handle.
The Bills have accumulated the second-most handle at 34.9%, with the Commanders receiving the third-most at 22.3%.
The Super Bowl favorite Eagles have received the least action, generating only 9.3% of the handle and 8.3% of the bets.
