Panthers release Clowney after 1 season
The Carolina Panthers released pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney after one season, the team announced Thursday.
Clowney registered 5.5 sacks in 2024.
The 32-year-old had joined the Panthers on a two-year, $20-million contract. Releasing him opens up $7.7 million in salary-cap space.
Clowney, the 2014 No. 1 pick, is now seeking his fourth team in as many seasons. He began his career with the Houston Texans (2014-18) before enjoying stints with the Seattle Seahawks (2019), Tennessee Titans (2020), Cleveland Browns (2021-22), and Baltimore Ravens (2023).
An above-average run defender, Clowney has never posted double-digit sacks in a single season. However, he's reached the nine-sack mark multiple times, most recently collecting 9.5 with Baltimore.
In addition to 5.5 sacks, the three-time Pro Bowler finished 2024 with 46 tackles (nine for loss), 11 QB hits, and four pass breakups in 14 games for Carolina.
The Panthers added promising pass-rushers this offseason, including rookies Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen. They also signed free agent Patrick Jones II, who had a career-high seven sacks on the Minnesota Vikings last year.
