Report: Dolphins won't activate Barrett from reserve list
The Miami Dolphins decided not to activate pass-rusher Shaquil Barrett off the reserve/retired list this season, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
However, the Dolphins don't intend to release him or allow him to play for another team for the remainder of the season, per Rapoport.
The two-time Pro Bowler applied for reinstatement this week and was willing to resume his career with the Dolphins after retiring earlier this year.
Barrett signed a one-year, $9-million deal with the franchise in the offseason before walking away from the game, and the franchise owns Barrett's rights. The Dolphins brought in the veteran linebacker to help bolster their pass rush after he recorded 17.5 sacks combined over his previous three seasons.
Barrett's season is over if he's not activated by 4 p.m. ET Thursday, according to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe. Barrett's contract will toll over to 2025 and he can ask Miami to grant his return again next season, per Wolfe.
Miami's pass rush has leaned on rookie Chop Robinson and Emmanuel Ogbah after losing Jaelan Phillips to a season-ending knee injury. Bradley Chubb hasn't played a game this season as he continues to make his way back from an ACL injury that ended his 2023 campaign.
The Dolphins face the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football.
