Saints' Jamaal Williams set to miss time due to hamstring injury

New Orleans Saints running back Jamaal Williams is expected to miss time after suffering a hamstring injury, head coach Dennis Allen said, according to team reporter Erin Summers.

The Saints did not provide a timetable for when Williams could return to action.

Williams went back to the Saints' locker room during the second quarter of the team's victory on Monday against the Carolina Panthers. He was listed as questionable to return but ultimately didn't see another snap.

The 28-year-old exited the game with 29 rushing yards on nine carries.

Williams is playing in his first season in New Orleans after signing a three-year, $12-million contract as a free agent in March. The BYU product found a new home after leading the league with 17 rushing scores to go along with 1,066 yards with the Detroit Lions in 2022.

The veteran Williams was expected to hold the feature tailback role while Alvin Kamara serves a three-game suspension for his role in fight outside a Las Vegas nightclub in 2022. Kamara will be eligible to return to action when the Saints host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 1.

Williams ran for 45 yards in the Saints' season-opening win over the Tennessee Titans to begin the seventh campaign of his career. He is currently on his third team after the Green Bay Packers drafted him in the fourth round in 2017.

New Orleans received some positive news in the backfield. Rookie Kendre Miller should be good to go this week after missing the first two games with his own hamstring ailment, Summers reports. The Saints are expected to lean on Miller and Tony Jones Jr., who replaced Williams on Monday night.
