Report: Hunt, Akers among RBs Browns interested in after Chubb injury

The Cleveland Browns are exploring the possibility of adding Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers and free agent Kareem Hunt, among others, following Nick Chubb's season-ending knee injury, sources told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

Hunt is visiting the Browns on Tuesday, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Tuesday the team would "look at options there in terms of who (they) bring in."

Akers appears likely to leave Los Angeles after being a healthy scratch Sunday. Head coach Sean McVay said Monday that the Rams have held discussions with other teams about the former second-round pick. Akers rushed for 29 yards on 22 carries in Week 1.

Bringing in Hunt would give the Browns the advantage of adding a running back familiar with their offense. The 28-year-old spent the last four seasons in Cleveland, with his best work coming in 2020 when he put up 841 yards on the ground and 11 total touchdowns. Hunt visited multiple teams as a free agent this offseason but remains unsigned.

Any incoming running back would likely arrive as depth after Stefanski named Jerome Ford the No. 1 rusher with Chubb sidelined. Stefanski declined to comment on potentially reuniting with Hunt.

Ford averaged over 6 yards per carry in Monday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, totaling 106 yards on 16 attempts. He also caught three passes for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Chubb was carted off the field in the second quarter of Monday's defeat after colliding with Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. It's believed Chubb suffered multiple torn ligaments, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
