Washington renames football team to Commanders

The Washington Football Team's new name will be the Commanders, the club announced Wednesday.

The franchise, which kept its burgundy and gold color scheme, has also revealed a new logo and uniforms ahead of the 2022 season.

The announcement ends the team's market research that spanned 18 months. Washington began looking for a new name after retiring the controversial Redskins moniker - which had been used since 1933 - and logo before the 2020 campaign. The club retired the old name amid pressure from many of its sponsors.

Last year, the team asked season-ticket holders for input on team name options, which included Rubies, Pilots, Wild Hogs, and Aces, among others. Keeping the Football Team brand was also considered by the club.

Washington became the fifth active franchise to change names while remaining in the same city, following the Chicago Bears in 1922 (formerly the Staleys), the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1940 (formerly the Pirates), the New York Jets in 1963 (formerly the Titans), and the Tennessee Titans in 1999 (formerly the Oilers).

Washington posted a 14-19 record over two seasons as the Football Team.
