The New York Giants selected cornerback Sam Beal out of Western Michigan in the third round of the NFL's supplemental draft Wednesday.

Beal was the first player selected in the supplemental draft since 2015, when the St. Louis Rams picked offensive tackle Isaiah Battle out of Clemson. He's the first player taken in the first three rounds since the Cleveland Browns chose wide receiver Josh Gordon in the second round in 2012.

The Giants owned the third pick of the third round. As a result of choosing Beal, they forfeit a third-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft.

"We feel like we're getting our third-round pick now," general manager Dave Gettleman said.

The 21-year-old Beal stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 195 pounds. He's coming off his junior year with the Broncos, in which he played in 11 games, starting all of them. Beal recorded two interceptions, one forced fumble, 26 tackles, and 12 passes defensed.
