Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Heintschel sustained the injury on the fourth play of the second half in Pitt's 35-33 win over Virginia Tech on Friday. The sophomore quarterback was spotted on crutches after the game, according to ESPN.
Fifth-year senior Holden Geriner entered the contest after the injury and said postgame that he'd be ready to take over the Panthers' offense if Heintschel were out long term.
"If that's the case, I'm going to do everything I can to continue preparing, as I've been doing, to lead this team," Geriner said.
Heintschel will end his second season at Pitt throwing for 1,304 yards, 14 touchdowns, and one interception, with a 66% completion rate. He garnered attention as a freshman last year after passing for 2,354 yards and 16 touchdowns.
