Manning scores 5 TDs in relief of injured Ewers

Quarterback Arch Manning sparked Texas with five total touchdowns - including two in a three-snap span - after replacing an injured Quinn Ewers on Saturday versus UTSA.

Ewers exited in the second quarter with a strained abdomen, head coach Steve Sarkisian said on the ESPN broadcast. The Heisman Trophy contender completed 14 of 16 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception before exiting the Week 3 matchup.

He was back on Texas' sideline in street clothes prior to the end of the first half and spent the rest of the contest there.

Manning, the highly touted nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning, threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore Jr. on his first play in relief.

In the Longhorns' next offensive series, Arch Manning dashed by defenders for a 67-yard touchdown run that pushed the lead to 21 points. The redshirt freshman's rushing score was the longest touchdown run by a Texas quarterback since Vince Young scored on an 80-yarder in 2005, per the Austin American-Statesman's Danny Davis.

Manning tossed three more touchdowns, leading the Longhorns to a 56-7 romp at home. He went 9-for-12, throwing for 223 yards without committing a turnover.

Ewers missed games in each of the two previous seasons because of shoulder injuries. Maalik Murphy, who replaced Ewers in the Longhorns' lineup during his 2023 absence, is now the starting quarterback for Duke.
