Former Ohio State and NFL running back Eddie George will be named the new coach at Tennessee State, sources told Stadium's Brett McMurphy.

The Tigers are currently led by Rod Reed. They will play their final game of the spring season Sunday against Southeast Missouri.

George has no coaching experience at any major level but he's widely considered a college football legend. His 1995 season at Ohio State was one of the best in school history as he captured the Heisman Trophy and Big Ten Player of the Year award.

Following his storied career with the Buckeyes, he was drafted in the first round by the then-Houston Oilers and spent eight seasons with the Oilers-Tennessee Titans franchise.

The 47-year-old had his No. 27 retired by both the Titans and Ohio State following his playing career.

Tennessee State is currently 2-4 in Reed's 11th campaign. The school amassed a 12-18 record over his previous three years.
