Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider will be shut down from throwing for four weeks after a consultation Monday with Dr. Keith Meister, the team announced.

Strider will undergo an MRI at the end of that four weeks, and if it comes back clean, he'll begin a throwing program.

The pitcher doesn't need surgery after his initial MRI showed inflammation but didn't reveal any ligament damage, MLB.com's Mark Bowman reported earlier Monday.

Strider was removed from Friday's outing against the New York Mets with arm soreness after his fastball velocity dipped into the 87-88 mph range.

The one-time All-Star is in the midst of a career-worst campaign with a 5.31 ERA and 5.36 FIP in eight starts.
