Cardinals agree to 2-year extension with manager Marmol
The St. Louis Cardinals believe Oliver Marmol is the manager to get them through their current rebuild.
St. Louis announced Sunday it's given Marmol a two-year extension that includes a club option for the 2029 season. He was entering his final year under contract.
"As I've gotten to know Oli, I've seen someone who cares about this organization and knows what has made the Cardinals special over time – and who understands that for us to get where we need to go, we must compete relentlessly to set new standards in everything that we do," Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom said in a statement.
"He is invested in the progress of our young core and is unafraid to challenge himself and to help those around him grow. I am energized to continue working with him towards the on-field success that we expect and that our fans deserve."
Marmol took over as manager prior to the 2022 season after serving in a variety of coaching roles with the organization. St. Louis went 93-69 and won the NL Central in his first year leading the team, but missed the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. The 39-year-old owns a 325-323 (.502) record across four seasons, and has two top-10 NL Manager of the Year finishes.
The Cardinals sold off a number of veterans this winter in order to rebuild under Bloom.
St. Louis hasn't missed the playoffs in four consecutive seasons since the early 1990s.
