Yankees' Cole scratched from start due to 'general body fatigue'

The New York Yankees announced right-hander Gerrit Cole was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday due to "general body fatigue," according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

Will Warren will start in Cole's place against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Cole was shelled in his most recent start, allowing six runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings against the New York Mets. It continued a string of streaky outings for the reigning AL Cy Young award winner, who's allowed at least five hits in each of his last four starts and in five of his seven outings in 2024.

The 33-year-old told reporters that what he's currently dealing with is not an arm issue, and he doesn't expect to be placed on the injured list, according to Kirschner. Manager Aaron Boone added that Cole's been battling a stomach virus over the past few days, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

Cole is viewing the rest as a chance to put "gas in the tank," according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

Cole only made his season debut in June after being shut down in the spring due to right elbow inflammation. Since returning, he's posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 35 innings, although he does own a 9.8 K/9 rate.

Warren is the Yankees' No. 7 prospect, per Baseball America, and will make his major-league debut Tuesday. The 25-year-old right-hander has put up a 6.11 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with 115 strikeouts in 20 starts at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but has pitched well of late, allowing only seven earned runs over his last four starts.
