Mets select Gary Sanchez
The Kraken is about to return to the Big Apple.
The New York Mets selected the contract of catcher Gary Sanchez, the team announced Friday.
In corresponding moves, the Mets optioned catcher Michael Perez to Triple-A Syracuse, moved outfielder Tim Locastro to the 60-day injured list with a thumb sprain, and sent catcher Tomas Nido on a rehab assignment to Low-A St. Lucie.
New York inked Sanchez to a minor-league deal on May 9 after the San Francisco Giants released him.
The 30-year-old backstop has played exceptionally well for the Syracuse Mets, hitting .318/.531/.546 with three extra-base hits and five RBIs in 32 plate appearances.
The Mets are currently using a tandem of rookie Francisco Alvarez and light-hitting Michael Perez behind the plate while Omar Narvaez is on the injured list.
Sanchez began his career in New York with the Yankees, where he was a two-time All-Star and one-time Silver Slugger. The Yankees traded him to the Minnesota Twins before the 2022 campaign.
