Phelps claimed 23 golds during his storied career.</p><p>The Norwegian team of Klaebo and Einar Hedegart crossed the line 1.4 seconds ahead of the American duo of Ben Ogden and Gus Schumacher, who claimed silver. Italy's Elia Barp and Federico Pellegrino won bronze.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"It's obviously very satisfying to make this happen," Klaebo said, according to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3480920" href="https://thescore.com/news/3480920">The Associated Press</a>. <p>The Canadian men's curling team qualified for the semifinals at the Milan Cortina Games as the Brad Jacobs-led side beat Great Britain 9-5 on Tuesday.</p><p>Canada scored three in the seventh and then proceeded to steal one in each of the next two ends before Bruce Mouat's team conceded prior to the 10th.</p><p>Canada sits in second place during round-robin play at 6-1, behind only Switzerland, which has a perfect 7-0 record. Team Jacobs has two round-robin matches remaining - one against Italy and another versus Norway - which may influence seeding.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Canadian men's team was part of a controversy early in the Olympics, as the Swedish team <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3480529" href="https://thescore.com/news/3480529">accused</a> Jacobs' third/vice skip, Marc Kennedy, of double-touching stones. Team Sweden, the defending Olympic men's champions, has since been eliminated from playoff contention.</p><p>Jacobs and Kennedy are part of a four-man team with Ben Hebert as well as Brett Gallant, who competed in mixed doubles curling with his partner, Jocelyn Peterman. The pair finished fifth, outside of a playoff spot.</p><p>The men's semifinals are scheduled for Thursday at 1:05 p.m. ET.</p><p>Four of the 10 teams will move on to the playoffs following round-robin play. Norway and Italy currently sit third and fourth, respectively, with 4-3 records. Norway holds the tiebreaker over the host after beating Italy earlier in the tournament.</p><p>The bronze-medal game is set for Friday at 1:05 p.m. ET, while the championship will be decided Saturday at 1:05 p.m. ET.</p>

This will be the fourth consecutive best-on-best international tournament in which the 38-year-old has worn the "C" for his country.</p><p>However, the Pittsburgh Penguins superstar hasn't acted as Canada's captain in the Olympics since Sochi 2014, the last year NHL players were permitted to compete at the Winter Games. </p><p>He led that team to gold, and also played for the 2010 squad in Vancouver, scoring the golden goal against the United States.</p><p>Crosby is in the midst of his 21st NHL season, all with the Penguins. He has 27 goals and 32 assists for 59 points through 56 games. The three-time Cup winner surpassed Mario Lemieux in career points earlier this year to become the all-time franchise leader.</p><p>McDavid and Makar were alternates in last year's 4 Nations Face-Off as well.</p><p>The 29-year-old McDavid is a three-time Hart Trophy winner and leads the NHL this season with 96 points in 58 games played.</p><p>Makar, 27, is a two-time Norris Trophy winner as the league's best defenseman. He has 15 goals and 42 assists for the NHL-leading Avalanche.</p><p>Canada opens its tournament in Italy on Feb. 12 against Czechia.</p>

<p>The Canadian women's hockey team beat Switzerland 4-0 in its Olympic opener at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games on Saturday.</p><p>The defending Olympic champs had the beginning of their tournament delayed when Finland couldn't play Thursday due to a stomach virus.</p><p>Finland lost its opener against Team USA earlier Saturday.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>While Canada won handily and outshot its opponent 55-6, the hockey powerhouse had trouble getting on the board.</p><p>Natalie Spooner, playing in her fourth Olympics, eventually opened the scoring midway through the second period.</p><p>Canada's 1-0 lead persisted until the third period when Sarah Fillier added some insurance.</p><p>Brianne Jenner contributed a power-play goal, and Daryl Watts tacked on the final tally in her Olympic debut.</p><p>Swiss goaltender Saskia Maurer was credited with 51 saves in the loss.</p><p>On Monday, Canada is scheduled to play Czechia, which has lost its first two games, including an overtime defeat to the Swiss on Friday.</p>

<p>Valerie Maltais won bronze in women's 3,000m long track speedskating to secure Canada's first medal of the 2026 Milan Cortina Games on Saturday.</p><p>This is Maltais' third Olympic medal but her first in an individual event after claiming gold in team pursuit during the 2022 Games in Beijing and silver in the 3,000m team relay in 2014.</p><p>The 35-year-old is competing in her fifth Olympics.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"I felt confident (racing) and feel relief and really emotional right now," Maltais told <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/speed-skating/olympics-long-track-speed-skating-women-3000-final-9.7078983">Doug Harrison of CBC Sports</a>, adding that this will likely be her final Olympics. <p>Mikael Kingsbury and Marielle Thompson have been named Team Canada's Olympic flag bearers for the Milan Cortina Games, the Canadian Olympic Committee announced Wednesday.</p><p>Kingsbury is a freestyle skier who will be competing in his fourth Olympic Games. The 33-year-old won gold in men's moguls during the 2018 Games in PyeongChang. He also captured silver in the event in 2014 and 2022.</p><p>"I had goosebumps when I heard that I was going to be a flag bearer," Kingsbury told <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/kingsbury-thompson-flag-bearers-canada-milano-cortina-olympics-9.7063893">CBC's Devin Heroux</a>. "One of the best honors in my life. Very proud."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Thompson will also be participating in her fourth Olympics. The 33-year-old freestyle skier specializes in ski cross, winning gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. From 2023-24, the slugger posted a .774 OPS with 30 home runs and 57 stolen bases in 241 contests. He's entering his first season of arbitration eligibility and won't hit free agency until after the 2028 campaign.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Lux will be joining his third franchise in three years. The 28-year-old is a traditional second baseman but has moved around the diamond, predominantly playing left field in his one season with the Reds. Through three seasons in the minors, the 24-year-old has a 5.25 ERA over 269 innings while making 54 starts and a pair of relief appearances.</p><p>Burke, 29, was a reliable member of the Angels' bullpen last year, owning a 3.36 ERA and 4.16 FIP over 61 2/3 innings. For his career, Burke has a 3.88 ERA and 4.26 FIP over five seasons dating back to 2019.</p>

<p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/60633" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/60633">Trae Young</a>'s tenure with the Atlanta Hawks is coming to an end as the two sides are collaborating on trade talks, <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/2008637366592733437?s=20">ESPN's Shams Charania</a> reports.</p><p>Young, who has spent more than seven seasons with the Hawks, is reportedly looking for a destination that would employ him as a lead guard and is willing to offer him a contract extension, Charania adds.</p><p>The four-time All-Star is on an expiring contract that has a $48.9-million player option for the 2026-27 season.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Hawks and Young failed to reach an extension agreement before the start of this season, and Atlanta has pivoted to its young core. Shooting guards <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/102785" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/102785">Dyson Daniels</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/60881" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/60881">Nickeil Alexander-Walker</a> are both averaging more minutes than Young, who has been held to 10 games this season due to injuries, including an MCL sprain.</p><p>However, Young has remained effective when on the floor, averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 assists while shooting 41.5% from the field.</p><p>The 27-year-old last appeared against the Knicks on Dec. 27, playing 31 minutes in the loss. He has since missed five games because of a quad injury.</p><p>The Hawks sit in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with a 17-21 record this season. They've lost nine of their last 11 contests.</p><p>Originally drafted fifth overall by the Dallas Mavericks, Young was acquired by Atlanta in a swap for <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/68198" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/68198">Luka Doncic</a>. Over eight years with the Hawks, Young has averaged 25.2 points and 9.8 assists while shooting 35.1% from deep.</p>

The veteran winger had already served a two-minute minor for roughing Schaefer during the first period.</p><p>The Blue Jackets wound up winning the game 4-2 after scoring three goals in the final five minutes including an empty-netter.</p>
